Digital detector

UniversalDetect

More confident drilling – the UniversalDetect offers detection of up to 10 cm in walls, drywall, ceilings and floors. It locates metal objects, single-phase live cables, or wooden substructures in drywalls for safer drilling when attaching objects to the wall.

g

Precision marking

The marking hole in the middle of the measuring range allows easy marking of critical or free areas with a pen.

g

LED light

Its LED traffic light system and optional acoustic warning signal indicate the location of a detected object.

g

Instructions

Step-by-step instructions provide various tips in 29 different languages on the touchscreen display.

g

Measure mode

Three modes for detecting metal objects and single-phase live cables in all common wall types, as well as substructures in drywalls.

  1. g

    Starting operation

To enable you to use your tool, we have integrated a step-by-step guide, which includes a user guide with animations to provide you with intuitive operation.

  2. g

    LED display

Set your detector to two operating modes (wood, metal or electricity) simultaneously and receive immediate feedback on the examined substructure via the LED display.

  3. g

    Built-in marking aid

The detector facilitates each of your work steps. It is not only intuitive to use when measuring, its built-in marking aid also allows you to measure and mark in one step.

  4. g

    Auto calibration

Thanks to fully automatic calibration, the measuring detector can be used immediately at home. The sensor shows you directly where possible drilling points are and what is in the substructure.

Why does the tool indicate that live wires are everywhere?

The device detects cables based on their transmitted signals, which can spread across the entire wall due to the high conductivity of the walls.

What should I do if the tool displays different results for the same measurement?

Follow the step-by-step guide when using the tool and make sure that all measurements are performed in the same way. In particular, move the tool three times in each direction – under constant external conditions.

Why does the signal change when the tool is moved along a live cable?

The construction of commercially available cables causes fluctuations in the electric field strength at the surface, which influences signal detection, through to complete elimination.

Why do I have problems locating three-phase power cables?

In the case of live three-phase power cables (e.g. power connection for the cooker), the different phases of the cable cancel each other out so that the detector cannot detect the signal.

Why does the tool indicate metal objects on the entire wall?

The tool detects certain construction materials as metal due to the high iron content (e.g. aluminium foil on underfloor heating systems or metal-clad thermal glass wool insulation).

Good quality and well made. Easy to set up and use. Metal dectection is good. Live wire detection I am not sure this works as well as it didnt show a live wire but a different detector did.

The touch screen LCD makes this very easy to use with tips and guidance displayed directly on the screen.

Effective detection of current, wood and metal is possible. We have trialled this around the house and it easily identified stud positions through plasterboard and even through a lath and plaster walls. Current is easily detected from nearby cables. I managed to detect joist positions even through a carpeted floor.

Make sure you earth the device when looking for cables by not wearing gloves and placing the other hand on the detection surface. Note: make sure the power is on, in the case of lightning circuits switch on the lights before detecting. It’s worth noting that 3-phase circuits cannot be detected so it may not be suitable for commercial applications.

The device calibrates as it is placed onto the surface which helps avoid inaccurate detection.

Overall very impressed by its performance, far better than the cheaper versions I’ve used in the past and much more accurate. Not sure if the LCD display is absolutely necessary but it makes using the device very simple.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very effective detection!

This is a little like a small, handheld metal detector, but it’s not, it’s a universal detector, detecting live wires, wood and metal which is hidden behind plasterboard and the like.
As I said, it’s handheld size, being about 250mm long by 90mm wide and 30mm deep at the scanning head and about 55mm at the handle. With there being a good 30mm gap for your hand to push through in order to get a grip on this.
It’s simple to use, load in the batteries, (4 XXX type which comes in the box) then press the red button on the device. This turns it on and lets you see through the settings, explaining what’s what as it goes. Just touch the arrows on the screen to scroll through the pages.
This checks for metal, wood and live wires so you know where everything is. You just select the one you want, or all of them if you want, and move this devices along the wall (example). If there’s nothing there this will stay silent and the green light around the small hole in the scanner will stay lit. If it scans over metal, wood or live wires, it will beep and the green light will turn red …
It’s very precise, flashing red exactly where it should without any false positives, which is what you need really.
It feels comfortable when using it, gripping easily in the hand, and is very light which means it can scan large areas without it becoming tiresome on the hand/arm.
The hole in the sensor head is designed so you can mark the area with more precision.
It has the well known brand of Bosch stamped on it which usually means this should be a quality piece of kit … so far it’s not let me down one bit.
As for the price, well, for less than 90 you can’t go wrong. Especially if you do a lo

The only thing I didn’t like was the battery method, I would prefer 1-2 18650 batteries or 2x AA instead of 4x awkward installed AAA’s. Other than that it did eventually work, but you have to put the batteries in 100% properly, even slightly off, it will display the error message in my video upload. I tested this out on my wall, and it detected the wood, as stated.

It also has a unique way of detecting electricity to boost effectivness. The screen is touch screen, and comes with on screen follow the on screen instructions kind of thing. It is very easy to use, and detection is pretty good, the accuracy is decent, on the opposite side there is a detection area, and that is where it detects it, and it also lights up to help detect in the dark.

What this did was help me find the wood in the wall and if any electric so I can drill and not hit metal or electricity. Very good product, but bad battery management. Perhaps they should have gone with usb-c rechargeable, but with the ability to switch out batteries.

    P.S
I don’t believe it takes 1.2v AAA batteries. You need to use 1.5v as I tried using 1.2v rechageables and it didn’t turn on. Pressing the button turns it on, holding it turns it off, the rest was just touch screen and follow the instructions very simple. Did not think Bosch did anything outside of kitchen/tools equipment, but it is quality and well made, and easy to hold, that also displays battery left and clear backlit display.

Great set up instructions, easy to use, excellent functionality – especially the marking hole in the indicator.
Live wire detection is very good in walls, excellent in the ceiling, other materials need to be detected and identified by a short process of elimination- which is explained in a message on the screen.
Overall I’m really happy with it and it operates and feels like a really good quality piece of kit.

This works very well just as long as you use it properly and follow the instructions carefully. It is a must if you plan to start drilling holes in the walls or floor without risking expensive damage or exposing yourself to unnecessary risk.

I saw mixed reviews about this and went ahead with buying it anyway (having purchased cheaper variants in the past with no success). It has a nice user interface and the light and detection features make it really easy to determine where something has been detected.

My original use case was finding where the wires ran from a now blanked off light junction so I could install a mirror. The live cable detector seems to work well when the connection is properly grounded, and clearly this one wasn’t because I couldn’t detect a live connection where I knew there was one.

The metal detector was a lot more useful and allowed me to trace the conduit very accurately from the box all the way to where it enters the room from the ceiling.

The experience ended with no burst pipes or broken/exposed wires which is exactly what I wanted.

Qu haba pasado?

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersI’ve never had much success using electronic stud / cable detectors. In my experience of them, they’re usually unable to detect anything meaningful and just bleep away inconsistently at anything. This one on the other hand, seems to be able to detect wood, metal objects and cables with current really quite accurately. I’ve tested it on completed projects where I know the placement of concealed cables, steelwork and studwork and it has located each one every time which is very confidence-inspiring for future use. It’s quite easy to use as pretty much all of the instructions/tips/hints are available on the colour touch display. You can set it to detect up to two types of detection simultaneously (metal and wood… or metal and current or wood and current) should you require… and alerts are by ‘traffic light’ LED and an audible beep.

Downsides? it doesn’t come with any form of carry case (so good luck to that fancy display when it comes to sharing space with hammers and screwdrivers in the toolbox). It’s also physically quite a big device (although it’s not heavy). The battery compartment has quite easily-snappable tabs to hold it on, so be careful with battery changes… and lastly, the colour touch display – which I have to admit, did draw me towards choosing this – is helpful, looks quite cool, but is not entirely neccessary.

Given what it ultimately does, and that it’s not exactly a ‘pro’ device, I think it’s a little bit pricey for your average picture hanging shelf erecting DIY’er. In any case, If you’re doing a lot of drilling into unknown walls, this one definitely works and therefore I recommended it. However, if Bosch do the same detection tech in one with selection buttons, no display and for less money, I would recommend that one more.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis is probably more for the professional; in that it has a hefty price tag but does a load of things for the would be driller or hole maker. It is not nice to try to improve your home and instead blow the electric so being able to detect electric wiring is brilliant and this really works.

It also detects anything that is hidden beneath the surface; including wood so will enable you to affix other things where you actually want to drill into different materials. It is easy to use (once you have read the instructions) in that it becomes intuitive and has a screen to assist you in your work.

It does need 4 x AAA to work and mine have not run out yet and I have done a fair bit of testing. My house is around 30 years old and I am still surprised that I have cabling in places that I can see no real need for, so overall I am pretty pleased with it. If I were a pro I would consider this essential kit, but as a DIY- er I would think twice before buying something with such a price tag as this is the upper end of the market; but if you want the best then this is probably it.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersI’ve owned a couple of pipe/cable detectors. They were simple and inexpensive, but they worked.

This Bosch tool is neither simple nor inexpensive but it does pretty much the same job. To be fair, it does a bit more (electric current and wood) than the tools I owned, and it does it in a much more elegant way. I’m just an occasional DIYer so all I really need is to know is if it’s safe to drill a hole where I want to drill a hole, though this new prospect of wood detection does open up possibilities of attaching things to joists through the ceiling. If you have plasterboard/lath-and-plaster walls then the wood detection will be invaluable for wall fixing of weighty objects.

The tool itself is physically big — almost 10″ long and 3.5″ at its widest. It runs off 4 x AAA batteries (supplied). These are easy to insert. The handle is a big loop you stick your fingers through. Ergonomics was left somewhere else when this was designed as it’s not overly comfortable to hold, though there is a rubberised liner to the hand grip which makes it a touch more comfortable than hard plastic. Still, for me, it’s in use for a minute or so at a time while I check out a prosepective hole location, so that’s not a deal breaker.

To use it you press an arrow that doesn’t fall quite as conveniently under the thumb as it could have. This switches the unit on. The big selling point of this tool is that it has a touch screen. Once turned on you can choose to detect metal, electric current, or wood. Press the appropriate word on the screen and the screen then tells you to place the tool on the wall. It knows when you haven’t placed it on the wall because only when you’ve placed the tool on the wall does it then tell you to move the tool sideways.

There is a hole in the tool just above the screen with a plastic rim. This rim lights up green when you turn it on and changes to red when it detects whatever it is you are looking for. It also bleeps to let you know you’ve found something. The bleep can be turned off via the settings screen. That hole, by the way, is big enough to get a pen or a pencil in so you can accurately mark the wall with the tool in place.

I’ve tested it for all three things and I have to say it works brilliantly. It finds buried cables, it detects the flow of current when I switch a light on, and knows when I turn it off.

All in all it is brilliant at what it does. But, unless you’re a professional who spends all day drilling holes in unknown walls, I think it may be just a bit over the top. It’s a lot to pay just to safely drill the occasional hole to put up a shelf. I think the whole touch screen thing, while very nice, is totally unnecessary for a stud/pipe/cable detector, and I’m not at all sure how well it will stand up to being thrown in a toolbox with a lot of heavy metal tools. But if you want the best, this is probably it. It does what it says, consistently, accurately, and with a touch of class.

Also ran an den Feind.

It’s important to keep one’s free hand on the wall near the detector otherwise the results given are wrong. The built in instructions which pop up when the detector is turned on is really useful therefore, especially when the detector isn’t used on a regular basis. It’s comfortable and easy to use but not 100% confidence giving.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI’m giving this a slightly hesitant 5/5 star rating for now, as thus far I’ve only used it in a test capacity, in order to write this review.

My previous similar device – I can’t recall the brand (thrown away some while ago!), but it was about 18-20, bought maybe 7 or 8 years ago – was utter garbage, indicating things when I knew there was nothing there, and failing to show things that I knew were there. I got that to help me re-wire a musical home studio. It was no help at all!

We’ve fairly recently bought a new home, and there will be plenty of opportunities to use this device in home-improvements. But as I have nothing on the go currently, it’s so far just been a matter of trying it out, to learn how to use it, and testing it over known wiring, pipes, and stud work.

Certainly it’s better designed than my previous one: the rubber handgrips, and the thinner handle make it comfortable and easy to use, as you swipe around walls, floors or ceilings. It’s also much more expensive and snazzy than my old one: this has a nice colour screen, with interactive controls that teach you how to set up and use the device, as well as showing you what readings you’re getting. My favourite aspect of the design, however, is the combination hole/traffic light doodad, in the middle of the devices ‘head’.

This last feature is the most intuitive aspect of the device, in terms of ‘reading’ the results; and the additional ability to mark off surfaces (pencilling in drilling points, for example) through the head/reading area of the machine is, frankly, a simple but brilliant idea. Come the new year, and a renewed assault on our domicile, I might adjust this review, depending on results. But at present, having only tested it, I’m very impressed.

Unlike my former unit, which was a total waste of both time and money, this appears to do what it’s made to do. I tested over hidden wiring (which I’d seen installed), visible heating pipes (both from a distance – approx 10cm – and ‘hidden’ temporarily behind a sheet of chipboard), and for studwork with a plasterboarded wall. In all instances this performed as anticipated.

So, not a cheap device. But given that it does what it’s supposed to, good value. And as other reviewers have noted, this sort of thing is essential for the hands on home-owner or DIY-er.

If you undertake any DIY then a detector is an essential item to have in the toolbox. Used with care and in accordance with instructions, it can ensure you stay safe whilst drilling into walls and hopefully avoiding two of my DIY almost-disasters: drilling into a live wire buried in a wall and a cold water pipe under floorboards. I didn’t know either was there and had foolishly assumed there wouldn’t be a wire in a bathroom wall that had no sockets or light switches and didn’t use my detector, only having the near disaster identified by a plumber who removed my screw and pointed out I had drilled within 1mm of an always live cable running up from the room below. I also drilled into a water pipe when fixing a squeaky floorboard, fortunately stopping before it was too late when I heard the pitch of the drill change. I now never assume anything when I pick up a drill and always check with a detector first.

This detector comes with the four AAA batteries needed to power it up but no storage case, which is a pity and a bit of an oversight as one would help to protect the gadget whilst stored. A multi-language instruction booklet is a must-read to ensure you use it properly and can safely detect live wires (as current), non-live wires (as metal) or water pipes (copper). It can also be used to find wood.

It accurately identified live wires in a known position (my test area, as I saw the cable installed so I know exactly where it runs) and the copper pipes that run down the wall. I am probably over cautious but testing you understand how to use the device and can identify potential hazards is imperative and something you probably already know if you are considering this item. It is not intuitive to use and you have to invest time to read and digest the manual – but it gets easier the more you use it and a test area has helped me a lot.

It is the best detector I have used to date and the most accurate.

I also found it so easy to use. Plus pleased to say the four AAA batteries are included. There is a comfortable handgrip plus just one on/off button with metal, power and wood selectors on the touch screen.

To use place the detector to be placed on the surface and then move from left to right etc until the contact is made. Used around home and a community centre. Works so well. So impressed really am.

I have memories of watching my father driving a nail into a wall, only to be met with a gush of water. No need to go through that danger today. I found this Bosch detector really accurate in determining where metal was underneath my plaster walls. Quite honestly, I do not think you can afford to be without something like this around the house, such is the danger from water and electricity close to the surface. This gadget is really neat. It works off four AAA batteries and provides quite accurate bleeps of unseen hazards under the surface. It can be set Cable, wood or metal from a touch screen. On first switching on you will see an instruction video. As you would expect, simplicity itself. A protective case is not provided and I really think you need one.Robust build, but that touch sensitive case badly needs some case protection, which is not supplied.

I’m an amateur DIYer, so in the past I have gotten out my drill and hoped for the best. Luckily, I have always been OK.

However, getting out this Bosch universal digital detector has made me realise just how lucky I have been. At the weekend we are planning to put up shelves, etc in our new extension. I didn’t ask the builder for a plan so am not sure where pipes, electrical cables, etc are. The Bosch 0603681300 showed me EXACTLY where to avoid drilling. It really is amazing. The colour touch screen is great and a real boon as we are all used to using touch screens nowadays.

The unit uses a traffic light system, so Green is OK and Red is danger. This surrounds a hole which you can use to mark the wall, so although we haven’t actually started work yet – that will be first thing Saturday – we have already marked out where we are going to put various shelves. Thanks to this device, we have had to rethink a couple of locations as the Bosch warned of live wiring where we wanted to drill. We discovered the cables on the POWER setting. Brilliant, really.

The unit itself is comfortable to use, not to heavy, but larger than I imagined it would be. A handy tool that I may not use too often but will certainly give me added peace of mind

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is a very easy to use and accurate detector. You simply hold it against the wall and switch it on. At first the screen shows a series of instructions on how to use the detector. You then select what you want to detect and slide the device from side to side. There is sound, a picture on the display and the coloured ring changes colour when something is detected. You can then mark the position through the hole in the detector.

None of these detectors are totally foolproof and do take a bit of getting used to as there is an art. They also work better on newer houses with regular thickness walls. In my experience I use multiple passes at different heights of the wall to ensure that I have found what I am looking for. This one seems to cope as well as my other Bosch professional detector, but this has the added bonus of the easy to use display.

I would have liked a case to have been included for protection when not in use, and the back of the detector is just hard plastic so it can mark the walls if you are heavy handed, but as a detector this does do the job very well.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersBosch 0603681300 UniversalDetect Digital Detector, price at review 89.99.

This digital detector from Bosch whilst being extremely useful to the DIY person or indeed tradesmen is also simplicity itself to operate.

Consisting of a simple well designed unit about 10 inches in length and powered by four AAA batteries (included).

The inner section of the comfortable handgrip is manufactured from a rubberised like material that is nice to the touch whilst still reducing the possibility of dropping the unit.

There is just one push button on/off control, plus metal, power and wood selectors on the touch screen.

Operation just requires the detector to be placed on the surface to be tested and then swept from left to right etc until a contact is made.

Further small movement in each direction allows for exact location of a contact.

I have tested the unit around our 1980s bungalow with excellent results in all categories; the ability to locate battens in our second lounge that was converted from a Garage has proved particularly useful.

The multi-language printed guide is hardly required as on each occasion the unit is switched on, a 7 screen operating manual displays the operation and individual features of each setting. This manual can be switched off once the user gains familiarity.

An essential addition to any tool kit.

his is an excellent piece of equipment. It is solidly made and really functionally. The operating part is over shaped and flat on the underside for placing on walls etc. The top of it contains a touch display screen and a sensor hole. Surrounding the hole the device operrates a traffic light system, green when ready, red when cable detected andd orange when mal function. The lower part of the device is a nice comfortable grip handle which contains the batteries. 4 x AAA batteries are required and were supplied. The on/off switch is ared circle and white pointer. When switched on the device will ask which mode you want be it metal wood or current. There is also a settings button and a help menu. We really did not have any use for it at the moment but my husband tested it by looking for cables and found it very responsive. Refitting our kitchen soon so wsure it will be very useful then. I do not have the knowledge to appreciate this detector but when I ask my husband he just says it is brillia

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersThe “Bosch 0603681300 UniversalDetect Digital Detector – Green” is a tool for the serious DIYer or professional with modest needs. It is quite large and has the appearance of a serious tool and not an almost plain, elongated box. It is swiped horizontally over areas where metal pipes, live mains cables or wooden beams etc may exist using the appropriate mode selected on its screen. Should you need to trace a horizontal or diagonal run, it can be rotated and scanned vertically. This includes a 2.4-inch colour touch-screen used for Mode selection, Menu options and read-outs including a bar-code strength indicator and textual information. The audible signal can be silenced if required and another screen language chosen from about 20 available. It uses a central ‘traffic light’ coloured LED ring surrounding a marking hole that accepts a pen or pencil to indicate position; red is a positive result, green negative; yellow is a ‘maybe’ or error. For metal pipes, RSJs, joists and similar large objects it has a detection depth of about 10cm, 5cm for live wiring and 2.5cm for wooden beams. It is fully self-calibrating and will turn off automatically after a few minutes if then unused.

Used over known live mains wiring, it responded quickly and precisely. Should wiring exist within metal conduits, ‘Metal’ mode will detect the conduits not what is within and non-live cables. The manual warns about specific safety issues when used in ‘Current’ detection mode and that it may not allow a reading with multi-strand wiring. It wasn’t possible to check for metal pipes as they were not originally used within the property although surface-mounted copper pipes were later installed for our central heating system and only hidden when passing through structures. Elsewhere, it found hidden screws or other small-ish metal objects invisible on the surface.

There are two included thick multi-language User Guides, one each for Western and Eastern Europe. They provide not only the essential information about the device and its functions but set-up and management information. They are certainly worth reading before first use and then kept in the event of a later issue as they may help resolve the problem.

Powered by readily available AAA batteries, included but not installed, this is the most expensive of the lower-end models and presumably the most sensitive. It could be suitable for the budget-conscious professional installer, fitter and other such tradesman whose use will be frequent but not need the extra features available in the progressively more expensive and extensively featured ‘Professional’ series, some of which are able to detect the same materials to greater depths, offer improved differentiation and an ability to find water-filled plastic pipes. The most advanced may be a tool for surveyors and those needing information about the structure and services within a building and their locations.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersCe dtecteur a 3 modes: bois, mtal et circuit lectrique.

    – voyant jaune : matriau dtect proximit,
