ADT At a Glance
ADT has been active in the security industry since its inception in 1874. The company developed the first automated burglar alarm system in 1940 and launched a combined home automation and security system called ADT Pulse in 2010, which they’ve continued to revamp to provide excellent security. As the biggest residential security company in the United States, ADT has a large number of security monitoring centers where professionals monitor home security systems 24/7 to help in the event of an emergency.
Because ADT has extensive security experience and a large network of monitoring centers, both homeowners and renters trust it to keep their homes safe. Forbes Advisor picked ADT as the Best Pro Monitoring security company on our 2021 list of Best Home Security Companies. ADT offers multiple home security monitoring plans as well as equipment packages.
Monitoring ranges from £28.99 per month to £59.99 per month and equipment packages cost between £9 and £14 per week. ADT does require a long-term contract and professional installation, so working with ADT isn’t necessarily the most budget-friendly choice. But to many customers, the peace of mind that comes with working with a reputable and professional security company is worth the extra cost.
Each of ADT’s three security packages requires a £99 installation charge and a 36-month monitoring contract.
On the plus side, the company has a six-month money-back guarantee if you change your mind or are unsatisfied with the service. ADT also has an extended warranty, called a Quality Service Plan, which comes with all online purchases and can be added to any package for £7 per month. It includes service at no extra charge if your system’s components need to be repaired down the line.
The cost of a home security plan incorporates multiple elements, including equipment, monitoring, installation and activation.
ADT’s professional monitoring costs between £28.99 and £59.99 per month, not including the cost of equipment. ADT’s home security plans are called Basic, Smart Home and Video & Smart Home. They each involve high-quality home security elements, but some have more components than others.
The Basic plan has 24/7 professional monitoring, Safewatch Cellguard (a program that enables your system to communicate with ADT’s Customer Monitoring Centers through cellular networks if needed) and access to the ADT mobile app. This costs £28.99 per month. For £45.99 per month, you will get everything that’s included in the Basic plan plus home automation features for the Smart Home plan.
And for £59.99 per month, you can get the Video & Smart Home package, which includes all of the previously mentioned items with the addition of live video surveillance and the option to record motion-activated clips.

Add-Ons and Upgrades
If you need security equipment (e.g., cameras and sensors), ADT has a wide variety of devices for you to choose from. ADT offers three home security component packages that include smart home equipment, motion sensors, security cameras and smart switches. The three packages build off of one another.
Starting with the basics, the Essentials plan includes alarm monitoring, a digital keypad, three door/window sensors, an infrared motion detector, alarm siren, backup battery, wireless keychain remote, yard sign and window decals. The Essentials plan starts at £9 per week. The Total Protection plan costs £11 per week.
It includes everything in the Essentials package plus Safewatch CellGuard, a service that enables your security system to communicate with ADT’s Customer Monitoring Centers through cellular networks. This acts as a backup in the event that your home telephone service is disconnected in an emergency. ADT’s Premium Protection plan offers more security with everything that’s included in the Total Protection package with the addition of ADT Pulse.
ADT Pulse connects your security monitoring to your home automation, which allows you to monitor and manage your system and smart devices remotely with the ADT Pulse mobile app. This package costs £14 per week.

With a package upgrade, you can add extra indoor and outdoor cameras as well as more smart home devices for an extra fee. ADT doesn’t provide exact prices online, so you’ll need to contact them for a more personalized plan that fits your needs.
Video cameras allow you to monitor your home when you’re not there.
And, oftentimes, intruders will flee when they spot one. If a crime does occur, your security video camera can capture valuable footage that may even serve as evidence in the court of law. ADT offers monitored security cameras with packages that include ADT Pulse.
The company offers unlimited security camera storage to record as many clips as you need, though clips are limited to 30 seconds.
ADT trains technicians to install your security system properly, so DIY installation isn’t necessary. The cost of professional installation depends on which package and equipment you purchase. A certified ADT security advisor will visit your home to discuss your security options and inspect your home to determine the possibilities and create a custom security plan.
Technicians will then install your system’s components and the advisor will return to ensure everything works properly. This professional installation makes ADT a good option for those who don’t want to worry about the installation process themselves. If you’re not comfortable with technology, ADT will take care of all the details for you.
Smartphone Controls and Smart Home Integration
ADT has a smartphone app that allows customers to monitor their home security remotely and manage automation devices, like smart thermostats and lights.
The company’s platform that allows you to integrate the features with your security system is called ADT Command and Control. It supports more than 150 devices and features geofencing technology that generates automations and alerts to trigger events, like turning off the living room lights before leaving for work in the morning. ADT works with Amazon’s voice assistant, Alexa, as well as Google Assistant.
You can ask either assistant to arm or disarm your system or control smart lights, locks and thermostats. That allows you to lock the door without getting out of bed, or disarm your system from the other room if there’s a false alarm.

Is ADT the Right Home Security Company for You?
ADT is one of the leading home security companies in the industry (and one of the oldest). If you’re looking for a reputable company, and if money isn’t a huge issue for you, ADT is an excellent choice.
Customers love ADT for the peace of mind it brings them knowing that the company is there to keep their home safe. However, if you’re on a budget, you may choose to skip ADT. Their monthly plan prices are relatively high in the industry.
