This makes an SM57 sound phenomenal! Tested it using the Cloudlifter against much more expensive microphones, and the SM57 + Cloudlifter sounds better. This one done using an audio interface that already has excellent preamps, the RME Fireface UCX. There is also significantly less noise when using this unit with the mic. Highly recommended, and far better than the Fethead. The Fethead added a significant amount of noise and didn’t sound good.

The CL-1 is worth the price, and elevates mics like the SM57 to a much higher level of quality. Better pickup, better sound quality, and less noise. And this is also the case when compared to using much more expensive condenser mics.

This product uses 48v phantom power, this is not advertised so if you dont have one it wont give you any gain( ie it wont work)
If you have a sm7b i cant really find a decent priced 48v pp so i believe.its expected to have one either on you mixer or sound card, this is why i havnt tested it yet as my numark mixer doesnt have 48v pp

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersIf you are having problems getting a higher sound level from your mic to the recorder or camera then this Cloud Microphones Cloudlifter CL-1 Mic Activator is the BEST solution. It is quiet and you don’t even know it is there except you now have plenty of volume. Of course they only have clean sound if you are getting clean out of your mic, they are not there to clean. They use XLR connectors and you will need phantom power on your recorder or camera and if not then you can pick up a phantom adapter for around $25.

I have the GoXLR with an SM7B, was having some issues where the gain was a bit low on it and turning up the gain from the GoXLR’s end introduced too much noise. Adding this in between worked great to reduce the noise while having it louder.

Worked beautifully and if you’re getting an SM7B and hoping to use it with a smaller interface, then yes, you do need it.

Can function without, but not as good. And you aren’t spending that much money for “half as good”

It isn’t cheap, but it really does sound incredible. 5* for sound quality, absolutely worth the money. I use a Shure SM-58 for vocals in an improv. home studio and this allows me to boost the signal sufficiently without overdriving the gain on my audio interface.

Before using this I had to turn the gain all the way up for my mic input, whereas now I only have to put it halfway for a clean -14dB signal.

Man, this thing really does what it claims. We hooked up new mics before the Cloudlifter arrived. We set the gain a left it alone. We hooked up the Cloudlifter the next day (without adjusting the gain) and damn near blew our eardrums out. We were able to pull the gain waaaaay back and still achieve a higher volume level that popped in a way it didn’t before.

I had my Shure running into a DBX 286a processor then to my audio interface. I always got a good strong audio level as the DBX has a pre amp in it as well as the interface. The problem was I could never get the compressor on the DBX to really work. I finally caved and got a cloud lifter to go in front of the DBX and wow it really brought it to life. With out the cloud lifter the DBX just never had enough level coming in from the SM7b to really do anything with. Wish I would have bought one years ago.

I just got some devices and was not aware this item was so important for everything else to work. Got a FocusRite interface and a Rode Podmic which cannot power itself and required to rise the gain on the audio interface to the top which caused a nasty sound.

I have been using an Electrovoice RE20 for many years. The sound quality is outstanding for voiceovers, but the recordings were soft, and needed to be boosted with gain, after capture. This was true, even when the recordings were made at close range in a loud voice. With the Cloudlifter CL-1 in place, I can speak in a normal tone of voice and capture voiceovers which do not require additional gain to be applied. It has really simplified the process of these recordings.

This product did as advertised. It really boosted the vocal gain. However, the flip side is that I have to lower the gain stage at the mixer. So I don’t really know how much I’ve improved because it gets to a feedback situation at much lower gain stage on the mixer. Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersI have a Shure SM7B I’m using with the Cloudlifter CL-1. Everything works as advertised and it’s very quiet as opposed to the ART MP Tube studio preamp I bought earlier elsewhere because I wanted to save money, I even replaced the tube to see if it would get quieter but nothing like the cloudlifter.

    My signal chain:
SM7B > Cloudlifter > Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB interface (48v phantom power must be on) and into Logic Pro X.

My vocals are now at 11 o’clock and they are clear, and I can really hear the true sound of the SM7B.

Morale of the story, get the Cloudlifter and don’t mess around with cheaper solutions like I did. Buy cheap buy twice.

A necessity for low gain mics like the SM7B

This device had definitely been helpful to me. I’m a Professor of Public Health and teach virtually. I use several different microphones and a Focus Rite Scarlett interface to my Dell computer. I also have Meniere’s Disease, wear hearing aids, and prefer to use headphones while on Zoom. Although this little booster is expensive, it did provide me with significantly more headroom. It boosts the gain level of your microphone channel. It may also boost the high frequencies a bit also. I like what it does and it’s sound quality. However, it’s expensive in my opinion.

i like it because it really does lower the frequency between the cord to the mike. however, I do sometimes time to time hear little static but could be because I need to have all my cables aimed upward and avoid them from being close to other cables. All in all, if the cable is by itself, it’ll be a perfect piece, however, I run 3 PCs and so the frequency is still there.. so will try to manage to adjust it if I can. however, it DOES improve
