FLIR TG165-X MSX Thermal Camera

What is MSX?

MSX adds visible light details to thermal images

FLIR MSX (Multi-Spectral Dynamic Imaging) adds visible light details to thermal images in real time for greater clarity, embedding edge and outline detail onto thermal readings. Unlike image fusing (merging of a visible light and thermal image), MSX does not dilute the thermal image or decrease thermal transparency.

Thermal imagers with MSX capabilities actually have two cameras—a thermal imager and a visible light camera (i.e. a typical digital camera). Every time you take a picture, both a thermal image and a visible image are captured simultaneously. Built-in software extracts key visible image elements—outlines, words, numbers, and other high-contrast edge details–and adds them to the thermal image. This helps give the image definition and makes it easier to tell what you’re looking at.

Golden Review Award: 32 From Our UsersJust got mine today and already amazed. People have said that the tg165 couldn’t see well past 10 feet. And I have also been told that the range of the tg167 is 60 percent better. If that were true then the maximum range of this camera would be 16 feet. The real range is probably closer to 10-15 times that. I spotted a rabbit at 40 feet. I couldn’t tell exactly what it was on the screen but I guessed right, a rabbit. It can see a human being from about 200 feet away and you can still tell it is a human being. Or Bigfoot or something like that. All of the features of this camera are great. The reduced angle view really isn’t that bad. In fact, it is great. You can put your hand on the wall and then take it off and you can see the hand print. You can also see your reflection in the in the window when visibly you don’t see a reflection at all. I could also spot a leak around our back door. My only complaint is that the screen freezes about once a minute for about 2 seconds. My only concern is that one time when the screen froze after I left the menu, the screen stayed frozen. I had to turn it off and then turn it back on again. After that, I haven’t that problem with it again. Word to the wise; don’t move very fast with this camera. Overall it is a great camera. I have wanted one for about 7 years now but could never afford one. I feel blessed to finally be able to own and use one.

Bought for a project and my engineer took it home and took thermal pics of all kinds of silly things around his house. Kids, dog, car, washing machine, wife. Nothing was safe from his photos.

The screen is a decent size, it’s clear and the quality is good. Fast boot, takes about 7-10 seconds and there’s plenty of options in the menu including calibration type features and a range of difference heat map modes.

I tested the temperature with a boiling kettle and it’s very accurate. The unit itself feels sturdy as well and comes with a MicroSD card for saving images which can be done by simply pulling the trigger.

There’s also a laser beam option for precise measuring, but you get a target overlay in the screen anyway so I never use the laser – but could be handy if in a tight spot where you can’t see the screen and you could use the laser and pull the trigger to take a screenshot.
