I find this rather heavy going. The suction is so strong it makes the actual process of vacuuming carpets rather laboured. It’s not all bad and for the price it’s excellent value.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAs far as vacuuming goes Charles is great on dry and wet I was especially impressed with the ability to suck up water.

I only have one criticism and that is that there isn’t a retractable power cable and neither is there a convenient way of storing the cable so it does get tangled up all the time.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAlready had a hetty & had it for 10 years plus & still working fine . I wanted a hoover to pick up water so brought the Charles am really pleased with it was worried when picking up water how would I know it was full but it stops sucking automatically so that’s good I’ve only used to empty the last bit of water out of a pool so far but I’m happy with it & hopefully it last as long as hetty which is still going strong

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAttracted that this is made in Britain, we bought one. High quality materials, comstruction and instructions. Extremely powerful motor, picks up very well without fuss or gimmicks. Only negative is absence of cable tidy but it can just be wrapped around the machine. Well recommended.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersSo easy to change from dry to wet and back. Suction so strong I think I could pluck my eyebrows with it (might need a different attachment). For many years I shunned Henry hoovers because I didn’t like the smiley face. What a fool. Love it.

Great hoover. A bit heavy but does a great job. Long lead so can get around rooms with ease.

Super machine. I use it for cleaning a school in evenings. Definitely too noisy for use during the day (compared to Henry for instance). Amazing suction, it’s even picked up ingrained glitter stuck in carpet since every Christmas ever!
I would def recommend for commercial use. Haven’t used wet function yet but have Numatic ever let me down.. no.
    Fab product.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is basically our rough jobs vac because Charles is no flyweight! My husband uses it in the workshop, we clean the car with it, etc. I agree with other reviewers that he’s up to any job, but I have to say there’s one thing he doesn’t like dead leaves! Hubby decided to vacuum the garage on Charles’ arrival, but the leaves in the corners blocked the tube. Nothing else gave Charlie Boy any trouble and I’m sure he’ll stand up to a fair amount of abuse. As a “shop vac” should. One star deducted for lack of flex winder.

Ordered this as it’s made in Britain. Good solid construction. Used it a small amount but purchased it for a bigger job about to start. If I want to be picky few more tools would be nice but has every thing needed for every day use.

Good for wet and dry. Incredible suction. Easy to put together. Floor, carpet hasn’t been so clean in years.

But, the one problem in an almost perfect machine is that the attachments fall off too easily. It’s not much more than a slight annoyance for myself but I can see this being quite a major drawback for a person who has mobility issues, having to bend down and pick up and put the ends of the hoover together (at worst) several times in a cleaning session.

I purchased this to use the wet function more than anything. I wanted to suck up excess water after manually shampooing my carpets. (I’ve had carpet shampooers and they are all useless) Anyhoo, I used the dry, normal vacuum function and OMG! It nearly sucked the carpet off the gripper rods. I did have the tiny cleaning head on at the time so I changed it for the larger one and it was still super strong. Excellent for getting up cat hair, much better than my Dyson animal and a third of the cost.

Golden Review Award: 28 From Our UsersFirst thing i want to do is clear up confusion about Charlies specs – different sellers giving different descriptions so i checked with Numatic directly – He is made in the UK – some of the parts may be sourced elsewhere but hes built in Chard, Somerset. He is 1060watts and his pipes/tubes are aluminium and painted grey. As a dry vacuum he has 15 litre capacity and as a wet vacuum he has 9 litres capacity – he is a wet *or* dry vacuum only. Dust bags are available and some were included in the box along with various attachments – some for making dry vacuuming easier others for wet vacuuming – the Numatic ref for the attachments is kit A21A.

Having a taller bucket and the motor being in his shiny black hat, could cause instability but Charlies base is extended and thats where the tools can be stored, with a slot that caters for the main hose and pipe – see photo – theres a hook that the cable can be put on once coiled although some people wrap it around the lid.

Before the original Henry was released in 1981, i used to have a VAX the iconic Orange and Black that was also a carpet cleaner and its problem was being top heavy – it used to fall over – The extended base on Charles ensures he is really stable when being pulled around so no falling over. He is really really light – and having had a Basil for 25+ years – the aluminium pipes on Charles rather than steel – make using Charles really easy.

As with all of the Numatic family – Henry and all his relatives, including Charles, have a great simplistic set up – the multiple section pipes make removing any blockage really easy.- lego bricks in particular have a habit of getting stuck in any vacuum cleaner.

The long black pipe is also easy to unblock because it just unscrews and is straight – and even the internal connector is easy to access.

Using a dustbag for regular vacuuming, ensures longevity with the motor – without the dustbag, rubble, wood chips from DIY etc are vacuumed up easily – which is why these machines are so popular with self employed builders.

I have the Hairo attachment – which is great not only for pet hairs because it has a rotating brush powered by the force of air sucked into the attachment… but being smaller its great in lots of awkward to get at places.

The rise of using rugs with hardwood floors, is where Charlies wet vacuuming is great – no need to wait for the sun to shine so you can dry them outside – because you can get so much water out with Charles – they dry inside really quickly….

If Charles is still going strong in 27 years, like my Basil who ive given to my son – then the 149 is very good value (5.51 per year).

Numatic also sell parts so that every model dating back to the first ever made can be repaired – so for our more eco conscious times theres less to go to landfill.

Great machine - great value for money

Pros: Fantastic suction power, lots of space to get plenty of dirt up between emptying, never seems to get clogged, and actually does work well with water.

Cons: Not really a complete con, but instead of a retracting power cable like the listing advertises, it has a reinforced power cable instead. A bit more of a fuss when getting it out & putting it away in exchange for a little extra durability.

Due to EU legislation a vacuum cleaner can only have a 620 watt motor, Charles is a wet/dry vacuum so it can have a more powerful motor. This was bought to replace a Henry vacuum cleaner which finally expired after 35 years. I cannot recommend the brand high enough.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI used this today for the first time. We had a smell kitchen and I realised we needed to clear the pipes. I weighed up the cost of a plumber call out and the cost of “Charles” and bought one. It has cleared a mass of muck from the pipes and drains associated with the kitchen. Then took it to clear the wash basin and bath. It picked up a whole load of hair that various drain cleaners hadn’t touched with its brilliant suction. Brilliant machine and worth the cost of calling the plumbers out twice. Recommended. It is sturdy and stable which is what put us off about several of the cheaper machines – so this is worth the extra.

I wanted a vacuum for my garage, it had to be able to take a lot of hard work. The boss would not let me use the house cleaner!!
Henry Charles arrived on time and after the initial introduction I set him to work. He was manoeuvreable and I like how the tools were displayed. However I was disappointed in his suck. I looked down the tube to see if anything was stuck but all was clear.
I will get use to his limitations but he will still have to work hard.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersYes you read it here ! This vacuum cleaner actually picks up pet hair and Christmas tree needles. It even effortlessly cleans the nylon dirt magnet hearth rug which clings greedily to anything that lands on it and my previous two machines were hopeless at removing crud from. Wish I had discovered this machine years ago. Yes it is big but then the the huge amount of lead means you don’t have to constantly unplug it and the long flexible and metal tube combination means you can reach stairs from either end easily.
I have not used the WET function yet…will report on that and give an update on the functionality in a few months.
Bet you can’t wait dear reader.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersInitial impressions only.

Long term fan of Dyson (V8, V10 and ball + hair driers), but when the V10 attachment broke, they wanted 120 to replace?! So we thought we’d give Charles a go.

Don’t let the friendly face fool you – in action, the fella’s absolutely savage. Don’t treat this as a Dyson – just because it goes up to “11” doesn’t mean you need all of the power, all of the time. It’s ok to open the inlet – if you don’t, be prepared for a work out.

Charles is simple – it’s a bucket, a hose and a motor. There’s no fancy batteries or LCD displays. What it does, it does without frills. The attachments are solid with minimal moving parts, but not bulky. The attachments are plastic – but the heavy duty sort – if they break, it’s ~10 to replace. The cable is very long, and so is the hose.

It’s chunky, solid and simple – the Yorkie bar of hoovers.

Note for folks with IT – operate with extreme caution – I’d stick with “lesser” machines. It will pull key caps and rip cables.

This Henry has bee excellent for a post building work clean. It is a little heavy to lug around but it has a good selection of attachments which are both powerful to suck up the dirt and gentle enough to not damage anything. I would recommend having this as main house hoover.

    Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAs a Heating Engineer/Plumber and also a general DIY’er, it is important to have a vacuum that is;

    Is very durable,
Can utilise a HEPA filter or HEPA bag,
Has a small footprint for the van,
    Can vacuum leaks when plumbing,
Can handle plaster and concrete dust,
Easy to repair when things go wrong,
    Can vacuum rubble without blockages,

The Charles vacuum ticks all the right boxes for the above.
I found vacuuming plaster dust with our home vacuum (Shark) to be troublesome as the vacuum filters blocked within minutes. The plaster dust is so fine that some bypassed the vacuums filter entirely and will later on damage the appliance.
Charles comes with HEPA bags and extras are easily purchased.

I sanded a full 4m x 2.4m wall using a Makita rotary sander, Charles ate the lot.
I removed the HEPA bag and threw it in the skip and no dust was seen at all. He also attached straight on to the sander.

I have also used Charles to vacuum out a blocked shower before working on the waste pipe. Indispensable piece of equipment for me.

    Highly rated.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI had the Henry vaccum before this but liked the idea of the wet cleaning facility this model has. All pretty much as the Henry is in terms of suction power and accessories. The only disappointment was that, when finished, on the Charles you have to coil the lead up yourself around the circumference whereas with the Henry you just wind it up and watch it coil up inside the dome very tidily.

Golden Review Award: 15 From Our Users…and 3 cheers for Charles! Another simply brilliant and brilliantly simple machine from Numatic. I have had ideas floating about in my head for a couple of weeks; cleaning ash out of the woodburning stoves, and the difficulties of washing a 300 year old stone floor (not even remotely smooth) in a cottage where wellies don’t necessarily get left at the back door. This fills in the gaps left by the Henry I already have. It comes complete with a set of tools (not made altogether clear in the description) which includes a handy and efficient floor tool with a sort of double squeegee which would be really good on normal smooth floors, but which I shall be surprised if I don’t have to replace regularly on my rough ones. Very good for cleaning out the shower drain without bending or groping about. Having had, in the past, Dyson, Hoover and Vax machines, this is my third Henry, and I would always choose them again.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI love this vacuum – no idea why I didn’t have one years ago! I haven’t tried the wet pick-up yet but the dry function is fantastic, especially with picking up our dog hairs. The suction is very powerful but not too noisy. Easily wheeled about but not too heavy to carry either. I wouldn’t want to take it up and downstairs as it is quite chunky but perfect if on the level. Huge capacity in the bags so they will last a while. I actually bought it for vacuuming our artificial lawn when the laburnum has shed but I use it just as much indoors now. Great length to the hose so has a really good reach to vacuum the wooden blinds. Tools stored easily and well around the base of the vacuum. Love it!

This the first “Henry” style vacuum I have owned my previous being a Dyson, and I am impressed! It has amazing suction and even lifts the carpet so it deep cleans. We bought this because we have dogs and cats and easily deals with the hair. If there was any negative point that would be it’s big especially when doing stairs but not really an issue!

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersSetting up was really easy, cos the manual showed each process in detail. You have to take the wet function filter out, as it is shipped with this in place. place a bag inside, making sure the fitting is firmly over the input nozzle, and then add the dust filter (loose in the box) replace the lid and Charles is ready to go. Screw the hose in place, choose your fitting for the job in hand and plug in.
The power it has is quite surprising! Mine tried to hoover up the carpet, and the rug in the main living room! It did pick up all sorts of things – loose stones that had been walked into the house were no problem. a good test of a vacuum is to take the Floor fitting off of the hose and put the open end of the hose against the ceiling. It should hold the weight of the hose easliy, and this one does that and is quite a yank to remove. Highly pleased with “Charles” and though I have yet to have a need to use him in “Wet” mode, but I assume that he will perform as well in that mode as he does in “Dry”
