Your Questions Answered
Where do all the grass clippings go? Grass clippings are so small and unnoticeable they will disappear back into your lawn and act as a natural fertiliser.
What is mulching? Mulching is where the tiny grass clippings disappear back into the soil, and act as a natural fertiliser, to create a healthy lawn.
Do you leave it in the garden permanently? It is suggested bringing the mower inside for winter. Make sure the mower is fully charged before storing away. Keep the robotic mower upright in a dry free area from frost, preferably in its original packaging.
How high does the boundary wire have to be? The boundary wire should sit at or under the ground level – not raised above it.
Is it pet friendly? Certainly. The ROB instantly reverses if it hits any object and changes direction. The blades are positioned well under the mower, so even if your animal was slightly bumped, there is no chance of them being harmed.
How long does a full charge last for? A full charge from the robotic will last around 60 minutes.
How does it charge itself? When required, the robotic mower will take itself back to the charging station and re-charge.

I use it for mowing the lawn. It’s a pleasure to see him out in the morning, working away by himself. I think, even if he were doing nothing, it would still be relaxing – better than a goldfish.
And the lawn looks fine. 🙂

Sometimes fails to park! Don’t know why it can park 90% of the time but then isn’t charging and not finishing the job.
Grass does look neat and tidy when it is working properly.
    Overall a good product.

Set up takes some time, my grass is kept tidy and with no effort he is cutting once a day and I am so happy with the purchase. Also my dog takes no notice as he trundles around the lawn. Sorry for saying he, we call it Robmo.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI am a typical bloke, boys with toys and like a little project. I installed this on my bit of grass which is about 1200 sq m i.e. right at the top end of the spec for this very reasonably priced machine. Sure it takes effort to familiarise yourself with it and definitely to set up the perimeter and remote guide/home wire (if you need it). Also a couple of weeks of fine tweaking as you learn where you have pushed your luck too far with the wires. So key bits of my experience of this are:

    1. The guide wires, even though green, do attract initial attention and comments (generally negative). Relax, in 6 weeks the wire will have pretty much disappeared as the grass grows around it. Mine is now invisible.
    2. Do cut the grass before you set the machine going – it isn’t designed to do a big/proper cut that you are used to. Do not expect a sudden miracle.
    3. Don’t be put off by the random nature of the cutting. Provided you match the cutting times to the size of your lawn, it will all get cut mainly when you are not looking.
    4. Do swap the blades every two to four weeks and in between reverse them to use the other cutting edge (not in any of the instructions!). They are cheap and at the same time you can remove grass build up. Takes five mins max.
    5. Be patient. After about three weeks it was clear from the margin grass (the bits beyond guide wire) you will really see the difference between the two. After four weeks things will start to look really good.
    6. Do pick up sticks and large leaves that fall on the lawn.
    7. After about 8 weeks or so, marvel at how your grass now looks like a carpet (honestly). All cut to the same length every day, lovely and green (I have mine set at about three quarters cut height – no point in setting it lower IMO).
    8. FINALLY, after you have named your mower, try not to waste too much time watching it. It is addictive and everyone who visits comments on it and the result.

While this product has been great, especially value for money, it has inspired me to but a way more expensive one (Ambrogio 4.36 @ 3,700) for my much larger area of c. 4500 sq m. Once you have one (or more) of these things in your life you will wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.

The set up time of installing the wires a lot longer than expected as dug them in. Needed more cable and a longer low voltage cable which increased the initial cost. Although still need to cut around the edges the remainder is well looked after by the robot. Grass is more even and looking healthier. It’s entertaining sitting watching it cut.

Although quiet there is some high pitch noise from the blades .
minimum cut is 2.5 cm so its no daisy cutter and as I have a dog I don’t want to use lawn weed killer

The fact that’s the minimum cut is the most disappointing thing about it .

I have a lot of plants so leaves and debris can litter the grass around the edges Once every 2 or 3 months its useful to just hoover them up with the lawn mower
but to do this you need the boundary wire buried

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersSo had this now for a couple of months and the installation was really challenging because the instructions have been translated poorly. There are some helpful you tube videos out there, so we opted to watch a few of those to check our understanding before starting.
We’re still moving the border wire every so often even now to perfect the border cutting, but as I haven’t had to cut my lawn for 2 months, I really don’t mind as my lawn looks perfectly manicured every day 🙂

Took me some time to plan and lay down the guide wires and the borders. Had to do it twice as because of my poor planning. But once done, the lawnmover is perfect. The app isn’t too useful as no configurable features in it, just the scheduler, but the lawn looks perfect and its a pleasure to watch Rob in action.

It’s as if the lawn is not growing because without any effort from me this robot lawn mower works away quietly keeping the grass the selected height. A wonderful machine, highly recommended.

Bought this just over a year ago and do not regret my purchase. We have a large lawn that used to take 2 hours to cut. I decided that I could save a lot of time with the Rob 1000, not to say solving the problem of what to do with all the grass cuttings!
Initially I pegged the boundary and return wire down around the lawn. Not a difficult task but fairly time consuming. However it was not long before the foxes became curious and pulled up the wire in several places and chewed through it! I would therefore recommend that the wire is buried. Although this does not, in my experience, completely solve the fox problem it has considerably reduced it and I have only had one minor problem this year. This could obviously be a problem with any robotic mower.
So, was it worth buying? Absolutely. The lawn is in good shape and always looks to be at the perfect height and I have saved money by not having to take grass cuttings to the tip. I have the feeling that it has also kept the weeds in the lawn down. I have only used a selective lawn weed killer (Esteem) once this year. Is this because the frequent and regular cutting plus the mulch has strengthened the grass? I don’t know but I am not complaining!
I have had a few mishaps. Occasionally the mower has got stuck when it comes to the border wire, backs off, and turns round. The single rear wheel has gone over the border and the drive wheels do not have sufficient traction to pull it back onto the lawn. I did not think that the border wire was too close to the edge but perhaps it is. Having said that it is a rare occurrence and is easily sorted. The only other problem is with apples being blown off the tree. The mower can run over them and get an apple stuck underneath. Very much a seasonal problem and I can’t blame the mower for that.
I have tried to give a balanced review with warts and all from just over a year’s operation. However I am delighted with the mower and would thoroughly recommend it.

Initially difficult to set up as had to buy additional spade terminals.
    Once fitted, no problem.
Works every day like clock work and keeps the grass evenly cut.
Much cheaper than employing a gardener.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI dont know why I didn’t buy this before. It used to take me 2 hours to mow the lawn. Since installing this I didnt touch my lawnmower. I found power cable to be too short though considering you need 1.5m space at each side and 2meter at front connecting to charging station. So had to buy longer power cable from another seller for it to reach power source. I have dogs as well and they never bothered it but watch it going around constantly. When you connect cables to connector make sure to press until gel comes out though. We werent sure why it wasnt working at first until we checked connections and realised needed to press connectors more firmly.

I have a fairly large front garden and 300m2 back garden so I bought this mower for the back garden to take some of the load off and to improve the condition of the grass. It was only cut every 2 weeks and was looking scrappy with lots of dandelions etc.
The mower arrived ahead of schedule and was well packaged. The one criticism is that there were 5 User Manuals included but not one was in English. I downloaded one after a short search.
There was a comprehensive parts list (in English) and all the parts were present.
The user manual is comprehensive, well written and easy to follow. The setup can take a few hours but it is straightforward and, if you get it right, you are rewarded with a functioning robotic mower. It has been working autonomously for a short couple of days but hasn’t put a wheel wrong. One of the reviews mentioned that you can spend a long time just watching it – true, but that’s just to make sure nothing goes wrong.
Strictly speaking this is only half a review and I hope to update it after a couple of months but so far so good.

So I thought I’d run it for a few weeks before writing this. It works it’s easy and is doing a good job! The instructions are more complicated than they need to be. Set up is easy. After a few days I started to notice a difference in the grass, now after a few weeks it’s looking thicker and greener! So basically the mower is actually a husqvarna in a different shell. It’s reduced hours of work into a quick strim around the edges. There’s only one down side I have come across, it’s leaving 3 little tracks where it comes out of its charging station other than that nothing else negative to report. Definitely worth the investment highly recommend.

Arrived with no operators guide but all other parts seemed to be there. Install was fairly easy and took about 1 hour. Fell into a flower bed and snipped its own boundary wire. But fixed pretty easily.

BIG ADVICE: If you get one watch the online install videos from McCulloch first before trying to install. better than the manual.

One small point is I wish it had a rain sensor. When Rob goes out in the rain he leaves unsightly muddy tracks everywhere.

2nd year of operation update: awesome in a word. So glad i bought this. I stored him in the garage over the winter period and brought him out in the late spring. Doing a great job keeping my lawn croquet-ready. Would buy another tomorrow if i needed one.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersHusqvarna owns McCulloch, Gardena and Flymo; all selling similar robotic mowers and all sharing many common Husqvarna parts. Each seems to have its own place in the market. I chose McCulloch as it seems to be aimed more at the smaller domestic market and my ROB S400 suited to my 400m2 sized lawn. Top end Husqvarna robotic mowers are aimed at larger spaces involving a number adjacent areas; Flymo at the smaller garden.
Overall I am very satisfied with the mower. It keeps the grass cut. There are a few things that could be better or the buyer should be aware of:
o The manual isn’t very easy to understand and there are still some things/features that I haven’t used because of this.
o Robotic mowers do not leave stripes and do not clear all the debris of leaves, twigs etc off the lawn like my rotary mower does. They are however self mulching and so grass clippings do not have to be dealt with.
o Care needs to be taken to remove twigs and other objects from the lawn that could blunt the blades. If dogs or foxes can get into the garden their excrement needs to be removed before the **** hits the fan!
o This mower has no rain sensor and will go out in all conditions: when its wet the underside does get covered with wet clippings.
o The blades get covered with grass resin, which builds up on both sides of the blade, making them blunter. Once a week I unscrew the blades and clean them off with a small bowl of water and a flat screwdriver. Midweek I will just clean the visible side of the blades.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI bought my Rob 400 earlier this year when my petrol mower packed up and Coronavirus prevented me from getting it repaired. The grass was rapidly growing under my feet so I took the bold step of buying a robotic mower, which eventually became known as Boris. I have to say I have no regrets and would strongly recommend it. I thought I would focus my review on the App which I downloaded to help communicate with Boris, and for him to tell me what was troubling him on a bad hair day!
The App works through Bluetooth on my android smartphone and the range is impressive. Boris lives at the bottom of the back garden (30 metres from the house) and 90% of the time I get an instant connection to Boris from inside the house (even from the front of the house).
The mowing schedule can be set from the app, allowing two cutting periods per day, with different setting for every day of the week if required. Also, the app can be used to over-ride the schedule by starting Boris at will, and then returning him to the base station to either await a new (manual) command, or to await the next scheduled instruction. So, in effect, once I had set Boris up, all instruction could be given from the comfort of my armchair or sunlounger. The App also provides information about the percentage of battery life remaining, the status of Boris (mowing or parked), whether there is a fault with Boris (or the perimeter/guide wire), and gives access to guides, manuals, and customer support. So if, when I draw the curtains at night, Boris is still cutting away in the dark, the app allows me to check that he has safely parked himself in his base station before retiring to bed myself. Cutting the grass has never been so easy, but I have grown fond of Boris and like to know that he is safely tucked in at night, and the app provides that reassurance. Alternatively, if I’m feeling wicked I can give Boris a shock by starting him at 5 am from the comfort of my bed! Hope this adds to all the other excellent reviews that informed my decision to buy Boris in the first place.

    There's something about Boris!

Took a while to install as I buried the cable. Rob 1000 only comes with 400m of wire. My garden is only about1/2 of robs max but still didn’t have enough wire. A week of operation and grass is looking great. Lawn has loads of bumps as new house but no issue for rob.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersWe bought the S600 after moving to our new house which has a big garden (550-600m2). After one or two cuts using a conventional petrol mower it became clear that cutting the grass was going to take at least 2-3 hours every few weeks which is time better spent with the family.

Our garden is fairly typical for England i.e. not perfectly flat/square as you see on the usual demo videos. Most of it is like the surface of the moon so I did question whether or not a robotic lawnmower would do the job. In addition, we have a big slope spanning the full width of the garden which we estimated to be 31 degrees using string, sticks, a spirit level and a tape measure, therefore, just within the tolerances of the S600. The majority of competing models will only cope with a 25 degree slope.

    Install:

This is the worst part of the job but there is an excellent video on YouTube by the manufacturer which provides a step-by-step guide (they make it look so effortless!) Most people bury the boundary wire to avoid the mower cutting into it which is what I did. Doing this, particularly on a big garden, takes a lot of time and I’m not the most patient of people – far from it, in fact.

I used a flat spade to dig around the perimeter then tucked the boundary wire into position. I then laid the guide wire across the middle of the lawn which allows the mower to find its way home. I followed the instructions and laid at an angle across the slope. In reality, you need to set at least half a day aside to lay the wire on a large garden and take regular breaks/deep breaths(!)

Tip – you can create ‘islands’ which involves looping the boundary wire around obstacles such as trees in our case. I did this for three trees and wish I had just laid a rectangular boundary wire and allowed the mower to bump into trees since creating an ‘island’ means that there’s 20-30cm or so of grass that does not get cut around the trees. Yes, you can programme the distance that the mower drives past the boundary wire but clearly this affects all boundaries, not just the ‘islands’. Not the easiest thing to explain.

The S600 comes supplied with 150m of wire but (frustratingly) I was left 5m or so from being able to complete the job so purchased another 25m. It’s always a good idea to have spare wire as even with a buried boundary/guide wire, wildlife will inevitably dig it up from time to time. Our lawn seems to be a sanctuary for moles which is part of the reason it is so lumpy.

Tip – when it comes to the connectors (particularly the blue ones) you are best using a pair of plumbers grips. You need to apply some force here to ensure contact is made otherwise you will run into issues as I did.

In terms of location for the charging base, you need to plan this carefully as the power supply is not the longest and it’s not possible to extend using terminal blocks (as far as I can tell). I plugged ours into a bedroom near the garden and routed the wire through a hole I drilled through the wall.

Tip – there’s no need to drill a hole big enough to push through the whole connector block – you can gently remove the terminals and reconnect them to the block once you have pushed them through the wall.

The charging base has an indicator light which tells you whether or not the setup is good. In my case, I had a flashing yellow light and instantly worried that I would have to dig up all of the wire. Fortunately, I checked all of the blue connectors first and found that I had not gripped them tightly enough. 30 minutes later and we were up and running.

    Operation:

The mower is very simple to operate, simply enter the size of your lawn and it will propose a cutting schedule. I’ve had the mower running for a month and have found the factory settings to be good. It cuts from 8am to 9pm-ish with charging breaks in between.

The mower is Bluetooth enabled which is useful for checking on the mower status from inside the house. If your house is quite a distance from the mower then you may find the Bluetooth feature less useful as you’ll need to go outside, at which point, you may as well just use the controls on the mower itself.

When it comes to cutting height, I recommend starting with the highest blade setting as going too low too soon may mean that grass gets rolled over rather than cut. I have gradually reduced the blade height to 3.5 which seems to be the sweet spot for our lawn. Any lower and the lawn gets covered in bald patches due to the bumps.

Once up and running the mower is a joy to watch as it goes about its business and returns to base when in need of a charge. We have two young children and have found that if the mower runs into an obstacle on the lawn (including a child!), it simply backs off and tries a different direction. Lifting the mower instantly stops the blades so it is also safe in this regard. In terms of negotiating the slopes, I have watched it a number of times and find that on occasion it struggles to gain traction on one side but eventually stops and takes a slightly different angle which gets it moving again. Clever stuff.

    Issues:

So far I’ve had a few teething issues but nothing that has made me regret purchasing. First of all, the mower has got stuck on two occasions where both wheels have sunk into a ditch and have continued to spin on the spot – the mower obviously thinks it is still in motion. A manual push sends it on its way.

Secondly, I had an issue where the mower was docking with the charging base but was not charging the battery (despite the charging indicator being lit). To solve this, I cleaned the contracts on both the mower and the charging base.

The blades required regular maintenance in the first couple of weeks as they quickly clogged up. I found that using an old razor blade to gently rake out the build-up on both sides of the cutting blades works well and is quicker than unscrewing them. The blades need to be moving effortlessly for optimal cutting. When you first look at then you question how they could possibly cut a lawn (think about the blades found on traditional electric/petrol mowers) but they do a fantastic job – just keep them clean.

    Security:

The security alarm is loud but not piercingly so and I think a thief would fancy their chances. I have seen people invest in fancy mower houses but in my view, you really shouldn’t draw attention to where it sleeps! I have built a very rubbish looking mower house from old wood to help disguise it when charging.

All in all I’m incredibly happy with the mower. It’s quite a big outlay for something that may seem like a gimmick but it actually works. Once you calculate the cost of running/maintaining a petrol mower or paying a gardener you realise it’s not a ridiculous amount of money. Pus, consider the time that you will be getting back.

    Excellent for big gardens!

    So happy with it.
We had an amiro for 6 months and that was a nightmare. We were placing back on it’s dock every day and it was getting stuck.
This one, it’s never gotten stuck! It’s doing a great job 🙂
All I would say, like others is that for that price, the ap should work with WiFi too and do more

Very easy installation, just allow yourself a couple of hours to mark out the guide wire, this will ensure that the mower doesn’t decide to give your best blooms a trim.

I’ve been changing the blades maybe 6 times a year which isn’t bad.

The smartapp is woeful, absolute rubbish, lost count of the times it’s crashed and needed reinstalling to work once again. I’ve given up on it now.

As other have said, restrict its cuts to 2-3 times a week, 7 days a week is overkill.

Once charged up it sets off mowing, works very quietly and parks itself when finished, mowing schedule is easy to setup, I think I will end up with about 3 days mowing spread through the week in the summer.

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersThere is little point me going over the performance of the machine, I think the other reviews capture it really well. However I want to bring to your attention the extra you pay for the S600 model. Firstly, it’s hard to find what the difference is and from my research I found the S600 has an app you can install on your phone. So I personally thought it was worth the extra 120 or so at the time I bought it. However, after buying the S600 I realised it was a mistake. It’s not because the app is bad or anything but has several limitations.
    1. The connection is Bluetooth only (not Wifi). That means a couple of things, firstly you can’t decide while you’re at work that you’d like the lawn mower to start mowing or get it to stay parked. You have to be physically there with your phone (which in my opinion defeats the object of having an app.
    2. Because it’s Bluetooth and the charging station is far away from the charging point I have to get out of the house and get into the garden to be close enough to use the Bluetooth signal.
    3. What you can do with the app is very limiting. Basically you can change the schedule and you can see the charge status. That’s pretty much it. Telling me the unit is “parked” is completely pointless because you have to be close enough to see the status anyway.

So to conclude the functionality you get of buying the app version is close to zero. I would say you can change the schedule, but here is the thing. How often do you change the schedule? And because you have to be in the garden to be within range, the status of the machine can be seen by just looking at the robot itself.

So please just be aware before you splash out on the app based version that it’s literally money down the drain. Also the app based version (S600) has less cutting capacity from what I see with the less expensive R1000.

Some other slight issues were: –
The manual is a little lacking in certain areas. It refers to “winter storage”, however, it doesn’t tell you what conditions need to be met. i.e. is it when it’s freezing, or when it’s rainy, etc..
Also the clips that hold the homing guide wire under the base, two of them snapped when setting up because they were really brittle. It wasn’t so important as the final two held, but it did feel like something wasn’t quite of the quality I would of expected.

On the plus side, so many of the components had Husqvarna markings on it, I suspect that you are getting a more expensive piece of kit without the Husqvarna price tag. So from that perspective, I’m very happy.

To justify the 4* rating (as it’s really a 5* piece of kit), it’s simply because the app and it’s additional cost cannot be justified. I thought the days of sticking on an app (just so you can call it a product with an app) without any real functionality were history. So it does feel like the item is a little dated.

Assuming the other models perform as well as the S600 I would give it 5*.

The Rob 1000 mulches the leaves no problem but the acorns cause still look untidy. So long as you don’t have branches or something like acorns then the Rib 1000 makes grass cutting effortless.

I am so pleased that we have this. Our grass now always looks well tended. We have a complicated garden on a slope so it took about a week of tweaking the perimeter wires for the robot to stop getting stuck in the flower beds. It rarely happens now and it is much more to do with the intricacies of the garden than how the machine operates.
Well worth the money. I was paying 40 a time to get the grass cut so over time it more than pays for itself.

Took around 3 hours to set up guide wires but it’s been working for a few months and I now never have to mow. It’s got some really useful features to suit your needs, I’ve got a very large garden and it manages it all with ease without having to mow every day.
All the parts have Husqvarna printed on them anyway, so the quality is the same.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI had done a lot of research so I was fairly sure this would work quite well.

    My expectations have been surpassed.

The following is my experience with a garden of around 600m/sq. I’m not at all skilled at general DIY.

    – Installation was very easy – around 2 hours to install the guide wire.
    – The mower goes about its business with very little input from me. I change the blades about once a month, which takes less than 5 minutes.
    – I needed to change the boundary to accommodate a new shed – this took around 20 minutes and was very easy. I have ordered spare 3m connectors from Amazon for future.

Overall, I would highly recommend this (or, I guess Robot mowers in general) as a device which will remove the chore of mowing a large lawn.

One thing I hadn’t expected was the quality of the lawn when it’s being cut this way. Ours is now like a carpet…all of the time!! Great!

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI did a lot of research in before pulling the trigger on this in April 2018. The general consensus was to buy a Husqvarna 105 which costs with installation 1500.
I’m going to let you in on a little secret. The McCulloch Rob 600 is a rebadged Husqvarna 105! The user manual is identical to the Husqvarna 105 user manual and you will actually see some Husqvarna branding on parts of the Rob 600 (under the lid and on the blades).
So getting the Rob 600 was a no-brainer for me after finding that out.
    Installation:
I decided to install this myself. I buried the cable around a grass area of roughly 160sqm. Took about 3 hours and was very straight forward. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow. T
here is absolutely no reason to be paying for a professional installation.

    Day to day:
This automower is simply excellent and one of the best products I have ever purchased. It is very reliable and the only time it will get stuck is if I leave kids toys on the lawn and it drives over them. The quality of the grass after 1 year of automowing is exceptional and a regular source of comment from visitors.
It is rare you purchase a product that actually gives you so much back. But this automower has meant I can spend my weekends enjoying my garden rather then maintaining it and I would recommend to anyone who has a mid-large size lawn.

Amazing value for money - 1 year i

Golden Review Award: 23 From Our UsersMowing the lawn was taking 1.5 hours. Also, I was having real problems fitting it in as we also have a rental and I couldn’t do the mowing when guests were lounging around. Some weekends were just too wet, etc etc. Then this came up on prime day and I bought it. Hmmm, my partner said, shaking his head. Its just not going to work. Look at our garden. Oh dear oh dear, what have you done. So he settled down to watch youtube videos on installation and I started planning what to do with my many new hours of leisure.
He figured it out. I had to buy some more boundary wire to stop him trying to mow the pond or anything silly. An afternoon was spent pegging. At first you can see the wires but soon they disappear into the grass. Same with his charging station. It has pretty much disappeared now.
There is a good length of wire for plugging in the charging station so we got that in and set him off. At first a good amount of time is spent following him around.
Our garden has 3 lawn areas. The bigger one is where Robert’s base camp is and he can meander around that and take himself home to charge. The other two area he does on manual. It’s really easy to switch him to manual and carry him over then set him off. When he runs out of charge or looks as though he’s about to. ( My partner can tell – he is better at picking up on Robert’s feelings than mine i think )
When he does the front garden he gets many admiring comments and I proudly tell people how good he is at mowing.
The lawn is looking better than it ever has. Much greener. It was pretty mossy in some parts but it definitely looks grassier now.
If in doubt then go for it. Getting those precious hours back every weekend and having a lusher lawn. He is my very favourite gadget.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersI have had this mower for 18 months now and I love it. It took a bit of time to set up but this is my second year with it and it is just great. The lawn is always tidy and in better condition than I have ever seen it. Of all the things I have purchased for the garden this is the best, it save loads of time and effort. This week I sold my ride on mower as it has not been used for over 12 months. My only reservation is how long it will last as it looks quite fragile however if I get 5 years of more out of it I would happy buy another as it has saved me 180 a year servicing my ride on. My lawn is mostly flat and about 750 sqm it handles it without problem on 4 days a week 9am to 9pm.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersHard little worker. Just gets on with it. Set up wasn’t too hard just a bit time consuming. I pinned my cables above ground to make it easy to adjust if I put them too far or too close to borders. Rob just trundles around the garden from 7 am until 10pm every day. Initially he got stuck on a couple of big holes where I’d removed trees but after filling the holes in and re-seeding no problem at all. It cut through the cable once where I hadn’t pinned it down low enough and the ground was uneven but easily repaired. No visible sign of any cutting going on other than the fact that the grass isn’t growing within the boundary whereas grass outside has grown several inches since Rob started mowing. I’ve now decided to time Rob to run just two days a week now as I noticed that the area near the boundary wires was becoming worn where he reverses and manoeuvres after reaching the boundary. I bought he 1000 which I think was probably overkill for my garden (350 sqm) and unless you have a very large garden there is no need to run Rob every day. My ground is very uneven where I’ve dug out weeds from the lawn and also there is a bit of a slope but neither of these things have caused any problems. I haven’t mowed the lawn for over a month now and wish I’d bought one of these earlier. Highly recommended.

Golden Review Award: 34 From Our UsersHave been looking at robot lawn mowers for a long time not knowing what to go for, I finally decided on the Mcculloch Rob 1000 due to similarities to husqvarna model. We have just over 400sqm of lawn which is uneven and not in the best shape with many obstacles. But thought the Mcculloch was a good choice due to brand and size of area it should cut, setting up is the same as every other mower with the guide cable which takes some time to get right. I quickly ran around edge of garden then back to base, then set him off to cut. It was the first cut of the year so was fairly long and wanted to see how the Rob would cope. It took about 3 days to get all down level and then started lowering the cut. Had now for about 3 weeks and nearly have running faultlessly, due to lots of places to get stuck, obstacles uneven ground etc it has taken some time to keep the mower running without getting stuck which at first seemed a bit of a faff but now has actually improved the garden and getting the lawn in better condition and a little leveler.
All the robotic mowers seem to be very similar and the Rob 1000 copes with no problem and does a good job and has got the grass lower than I can with a normal mower due to the uneven lawn. If I were to buy again I would try to get a app based one but still can’t find one at a sensible price so at the moment I would still pick this Mcculloch Rob 1000

    OK value for money

I had a lot of reservations about moving from my Countax 2050 to three separate robo mowers. I can tel you the cutting action is amazing. dont worry about the cuttings. they magically – yes they do disappear.
Right now i probably spend as much time patting the little guys and saying thanks to them than i did actually mowing before. just do i

Golden Review Award: 44 From Our UsersI am in my mid-eighties and was finding some of the mowing fairly strenuous. Our garden has 7 lawns of various sizes, but the smaller ones were causing me the greatest difficulty because the mower, although self- propelled, had to be tipped to turn and pulled back from edges or under bushes. Also one lawn has an incline of about 10% and this was becoming hard work. I was sceptical about having a robot mower until I heard of other people’s experiences and am extremely pleased to have installed one . It ran for two months last summer and went immediately after charging when I set it off this year and, under manual it still seems to run for about 1 hours before requiring to charge — even on the sloping lawn.
After reading the reviews and watching Youtube videos I decided that I would purchase a McCulloch ROB 1000 as the specification of the cheaper models had little difference and it was the one claiming to cut the larger area. The installation was straightforward. We used a spade pushed in at about an angle of 60o, slightly easing the turf up and pushing the cable in about 2″ and pressing the turf back. This allows for no worries when one is strimming edges. Two lawns I still mow with the conventional mower as they have long straight runs and it gives me exercise! Two lawns have the guide wire installed which is very useful, but the remaining three the mower has to be on manual but as it is so light there is really no difficulty in carrying it between the areas. If it continues to be reliable I will consider it a most worthwhile investment. I have not found anything in the design which I think requires improvement.

Golden Review Award: 60 From Our UsersSo, Just thought i would put together a review of my installation. I purchased this mower to due value for money, size (1000 SqM) and relationship to Husquvarna – there are various Husky parts in it. Power supply battery to name a few. So in comparison to the Husky range which i wasnt willing to stretch to i though the Rob1000 was a good all rounder.

My Garden is L Shaped and has over 15 Tree/s Bushes in island format so the installation was not straight forward. Cabling took about 2 hours, its beyond simple anyone can do it. Just roll cable , peg it down and tap with a mallet done. Plan the base Station location for power supply. I ran a new RCD 2 Gang socket from the attic off a spur so was simple enough. (bungalow). And base station unit is just off the rear of the house. Once i crimped the connections and plugged them into the back of the charge. I then ran the guide wire diagonally across the rear garden so the mower could pick it up efficiently. Crimped that in place and good to go. I did precharge my Rob1000 the night before so that it had a full charge. Set it to Auto and press start closed the lid and off it goes its been around the garden 3 times now and charged in between.
I actually don’t understand the reviews on this that complain about Installation or faffing or some folks even sending back because the cant install it. It has to be one of the least complicated things i have done this year. If you are not into it then get one of the nieces or nephews to give you a hand. Anyone that can read a 1 sheet quick guide can install this thing.

I shall let you know how operation goes as i get it cutting over the next few weeks.

For now. Delighted with the purchase – no negatives

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersExcellent piece of technology. Simple setup a bit time consuming, but it definitely saves time in the long run. The Rob r600 is fully waterproof even in heavy rain, I live in the UK so rain is typical day. I’ve had Rob running for 3 days: 1st day (cloudy no rain), it cut the grass nicely. 2nd day(rained lightly), the grass looked great. 3rd day (heavy rain), it kept going like a little trooper but the next day it turn most the grass into muddy spots, where it had been going over the most. Only problem I have is it keeps getting stuck on its charing station whilst it cuts the grass. But all in all… it’s a must buy.

This mower does a great job. Installed in a complex shaped garden in about 3hours so really easy to do. One section of the lawn is on a slope and it manages fine. Been using it for +/-2minths and grass looks great. Highly recommend it.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersNamed ‘BOB’. I have now had the ROB 600 for 2 weeks now and it is performing brilliantly. Initially I set the boundary wire loosely to ‘trial’ how he would perform. I found that I could set the wire adjacent to a shed at 150mm rather than 200mm as recommended and 50mm against borders and paved areas. We have a swing and trampoline in the garden. He did ‘ride’ over the trampoline tubes and get stuck. To fix this issue, I have attached some 100mm wood to each side of the tubes.
Thought that the ‘Scotchlock’ type connections were not brilliant, so changed them for Lucar type. Where the boundary wire connects to the guide wire, I soldered the joint and then used heatshrink, only because I have all the bits, being an auto electrician.
    Would fully recommend this model.

This is genuinely effortless. It took me around an hour and a half to set up, but once it’s running it’s just there.
I’d read the reviews about it being quiet enough to leave on at night and didn’t particularly believe them. I set mine to mow from 0400 to 0800, then come back out at 1800 to 2300 and I honestly don’t notice it mowing unless I’m pretty much standing next to it.
Its now October so I’ve reduced it to just two days a week instead of six.
The grass is loads healthier and the cut is always uniform. I had imagined bits to get missed but this isn’t an issue at all. I’ve had to clean the wheels once when they were full of mud and sticky grass, but I’ve now realised that if you just leave them they dry up and it crumbles away anyway.
I can’t recommend highly enough. I don’t understand why anybody would buy a normal lawn mower anymore

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersBought to replace my broken lawn mower. Amazing. Easy to setup. Took less than 2 hours and my garden is quite big. After it getting stuck a couple of times and having to fill a handful of holes in my grass Rob just gets on with it. My grass is not the best with it being very uneven and having a couple of inclines but when it gets stuck usually only in the wet it just finds a different way.

Money well spent. Very cheap on Amazon.

I will try to upload a video.

This works a treat, as we were putting turf down on a new house build, we were able to lay the wires in advance, which made it very easy to do, the set up instructions were clear, and off he went, my lawn looks great, he cuts away doing its own thing, we went on 2 weeks holiday just after installation x when we got back the mower was still working away and the lawn looks fantastic, one small negative Amazon, pls make it clear what you get in the box, I bought additional boundary wire I didn’t need, it comes with something like 200m

Golden Review Award: 19 From Our UsersSetting up bit of a faff, but watched some YouTube videos and almost obeyed the instructions fully. Where I sited the mower isn’t wide enough to suit the manual, but the mower seems fine with it (tweaked the wires so it didn’t trap itself).
Would use the plastic stakes to secure the wire until happy with it. Ran it several hours a day for a start to find where it would get stuck (lawn is far from perfect and had a few holes presumably dug by previous owner’s dog). Filled holes and staked wires where any slack appeared in the wires.
Been running faultlessly for weeks now.
Got a good price on Prime Day – similar R600 model would easily do my garden but was actually more expensive. Less orange than the Flymo.
Most of the visually similar robot mowers (Flymo, Gardena, Husqvarna 105) are all made by divisions of Husqvarna (this McCulloch one came with a Husqvarna power supply). The bases are virtually identical, and the wiring is the same – right down to the distances to borders etc. Worth bearing in mind when it does eventually die that any replacement would just be a case of swapping out the charging base and the mower rather than having to run new wires round the garden.

Golden Review Award: 43 From Our UsersI ordered this on the recommendation of a friend, after doing some research (as it isn’t cheap). It arrived well packaged with everything being obvious as to what it is etc. The set up was pretty easy although it is time consuming. My only gripe here is that they only supply just enough cable so I have had to buy more in order to make it easier for the main unit to find it’s way back to the charging station (my lawn is long and thin and slightly irregularly shaped) hence only 4 stars.

I did a final cut on my lawn with the mower before setting off the robot and so far the machine has kept the grass neat and tidy. We have also suffered with dandelions this year but since using the Rob600 we have had none!

I am really pleased with how effective this is, as I was a little skeptical at first. It is virtually silent so you can run it overnight without worrying about disturbing anyone.

As mentioned my lawn is an irregular shape but the machine still manages to get to all parts of it eventually.

Overall s great product that was well packaged, easy to set up, has very clear instructions and is very effective.

A word of warning though, you’ll find yourself sitting in the garden watching it for hours!

Golden Review Award: 14 From Our UsersI give this 4 stars, as the first one a got was duff, out of the box….but now on my second one, two week in, and I’m now impressed. I suspect Robotic Lawnmowers will become a bit like dishwashers, once you’ve had one there is no going back; and if it breaks, you’ll just go and get another. In terms of setting up for your lawn, I’m guessing all Robomowers work on the same principle, ie. you set up a boundary cable (allow plenty of time), that is an unbroken loop, starting at the base station, running round your lawn, and then back to the base station. Our lawn is a little irregular with tree and bushes in the middle. If you have something solid (lets say like a post, you don’t need to go around it with the boundary, as the mower will just bump into it, turns around and carries on. But if say you have a tree in the middle of your lawn, you’ll have to come out from the edge, go around the tree, and back to the edge again. (Essentially this mean you have two wires running parallel close together across the middle of your lawn), which is just a bit fiddly to set up, but doesn’t affect the cut.
Ultimately, now the mower just trundles off every now and then of its own accord (as per whatever timed program you set), and the result is that my lawn is always perfectly mowed, and its seems in better condition than before. Minor hiccup with it running over the trampoline legs as they are low (as we move this around you can’t trace it with the boundary wire) but we fixed that wrapping around some gaffer tape which it now bumps into. It won’t suit every lawn (eg if you have steps), but if you have a big patch of grass on one level, allowing for a bit of undulation, what’s not to like ….

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersIt took a while to setup, including digging the wire around the large entire (complex shape, but no path) lawn

But once that’s done, the robot comes out, trundles around (see video), and returns to its home to recuperate when it needs to recharge its batteries.

Totally mesmerising to watch. We gave it some obstacles (garden chair on side) and it detected them without issue.

It’s a little but often approach – continuously cutting the grass into tiny pieces (leaving them to mulch) such that the grass never gets to grow long. Totally different from our previous manual approach of once a fortnight or worse, and having to tackle long grass. As the grass never gets long, the pieces are tiny, there little mulch present at any one time and basically invisible.

It’s not for highly cosmetic lawns – there won’t be any stripes as it runs totally random, changing direction whenever it reaches the boundary wire or an obstacle (which it’s very good at detecting without causing damage). But it does keep the lawn at a tidy length. You can keep it running throughout the summer, and just put it away in the Autumn when the grass stops growing. It’s waterproof, including the charging station.

It’s intended for larger lawns – you’ll need a space for its “home” by the edge of the grass, and that will need access to the mains (waterproof external mains point). Then you’ll need to ensure the unit can reach all areas – no path across it, for example. Then it becomes a “leave and forget” machine, quietly cutting your grass every day (even when it rains). Just take in at the end of the growing season, i.e. autumn, and bring out again in spring.

  91. Laura Leavitt says:

Golden Review Award: 14 From Our UsersWhether this robo-lawnmower will be of any use to you will depend on the preconditions for using one, of which there are a few.

    In particular you must:
    – have an external power socket;
    – have somewhere to position the large charging station for the mower, away from the lawn, and where wires can reach without becoming trip-hazards;
    – be prepared to lay wire all around the boundary of your lawn, on the surface or buried;
    – have a reasonable smooth lawn; and
    – not have your lawn divided e.g. by a path.

These requirements will make this mower unsuitable for many lawns so think carefully before buying. However, if you can meet these preconditions for use, you will be rewarded. Once up and running the Rob R600 has done a fabulous job on my lawn, keeping it short and green. Regular cutting is key to lush green lawn, and the robo mower helps to achieve that. The robo-mower did get stick a couple of times and needed to be moved to get going again, but these have felt like isolated cases.

It is great to watch the robot do all the work for you – it is easy to be mesmerised, watching it roll back and forth. It is quite and inobtrusive and can be set to work overnight if preferred.

Golden Review Award: 18 From Our UsersI have a McCulloch & Bower petrol engine which, other than the odd minor service, never lets me down. I was really interested to try the robot lawnmower as, like most people, I tend to have the grass in a cycle of very long followed by a struggle to cut it.

In case you don’t want to read all of the review I would l say the robot is an excellent way of keeping the grass short, although the price is a lot – but a great investment. It works perfectly and just does the job so well. Really love it. In fact I find myself transfixed watching it do its job.

Setup: give yourself 2 hours to unbox, read the instructions (very long but fairly easy to understand) and to peg out the area. You will need a hammer, wire cutters and small grips (for the coupling).

First find somewhere to put the charging station. We have an area which is out of the sun half the day and where I don’t mind the grass being killed off. I had trouble screwing in one of the screws (they are long!) but a gentle hammering got it in. I then laid down the cable, splitting the garden in 2 across a path. All you have to do is not cross the cable and keep away from trees, raised patios. I would say give 25 cm (it can be set to cut between 20-30 cms over the wire). Originally I set it too close and Mo (the name we gave the robot!) hit the patio a lot and once got beached. Moving out the pegs helped a lot. You then have more space for a strimmer as obviously your borders near walls will not get cut.

Once you have the cable laid out and pegged (you get a lot of pegs) you need to attach clips and connect to the charging station (plus of course you need access to power) and then lay out a guide wire so Mo can find its way back home. The guide wire goes in a cut in the other wire and coupled together. I am pretty hopeless at DIY but I managed to do it.

One word of advice: having set it all up and connected the wires I had a flashing blue light to say there was a circuit break. I started check ing the wire and then thought about the guide wire coupler. You really have to get it in tight and will need to use grips to do this. The cover needs to be flush which the picture does show but it isn’t obvious what it means. Once this was done it worked perfectly.

The robot is simple to program using an 80s style keypad and display (very retro). I gave it a test run which scared the life out of my little dogs but they soon got used to it. We have Mo working for 4 hours between 7am and 1pm, you can set what suits you, the time needed depends on the size of lawn. It is quiet in operation although the outer protective case does rattle a bit.

Cutting: either my grass has stopped growing or Mo is doing a perfect job. As you can see in the video my lawn is split by a path so I do have to lift it over to the left side. When he is on the main lawn he cuts until his charge gets low, he finds the station and then sets off again. The motion is random so the grass looks even. I am extremely impressed at how easy it is.

Security: the robot emits a high pitched screech if lifted and won’t work without a pin. So if someone does decide to steal him they can’t use it, which is a deterrent.

I don’t really have any reservations. You do have to either put the robot out of sight or be happy, like us, to have it in view. You will have to strim still, which is fine.

Overall a great mower which does its job with little fuss.

Golden Review Award: 30 From Our UsersThis is the second robot lawnmower I now have, last year having purchased the Flymo one. This one of course is a Vine review but I can say with 100% certainty that it is a brilliant thing having used the identikit one for over a year.

I have this one set up on another part of my garden and it has happily been cutting grass for a couple of weeks now. Most of all though I have a year with the Flymo in use so I know for sure how it preforms.

    And it works wonderfully.

First of all you need to establish a power supply at a convenient place and out of the way of anyone or anything that will cause damage to it. You then have to run out a boundary wire from and returning to the charging base unit. You also run out a wire that acts as a guide back to base as well.

With the wire when I first got my other unit some time ago I pegged it down – and it does have to be close to the surface or the wire can be cut – with the intention of burying it later on. Well later on never came and to be honest after a few months in use the wire became invisible under the grass and now it has all but vanished sub-surface. I have not even considered burying the new mower wire because by next spring I won’t be able to find it anyway.

First off you have to cut the lawn to a sensible level. This gives the mower the start it needs.

Then you can do all sorts of fancy programming but you don’t have to. I didn’t. I set the time and date and gave it a password. That way if it gets nicked it won’t be any use.

Once you have done that you input the password and select ‘Start.’ It will think a bit then start off on it’s merry way. Mine was preset to set off at seven in the morning and stop at 1800. During that time it will periodically bimble back to base to rest and recuperate, i.e. recharge.

When cutting it will head off in a random direction until it comes to the boundary wire at which point it will stop and then head off in another direction. Eventually the entire lawn is covered but without tracks due to a regular pattern.

The idea is that the mower constantly cuts tiny bits of grass which mulch down in very much the way the Americans cut their lawns. The amount cut each time is so small you simply don’t see it.

Over the year I’ve used my Flymo version I have not had to cut my grass at all apart from the small edge strip which the robot wont get to due to the boundary wire. This takes me one pass with a normal mower every few weeks.

The mower will cope with 25 deg slope and I can confirm this as part of my garden has this fall.

You do need to have a fairly smooth garden lawn so no pastures or mole wrecked patches..

Now, here’s the thing. I have enclosed pictures of the Flymo robot because this is a brand marketed item. In fact it seems that there are quite a few names given to this machine along with varying prices to go with it. My Flymo version is a couple of hundred quid cheaper than this at the time of writing this but it is in effect the same machine. With one difference. The area that can be covered. This machine can cut 600m2 compared to the Flymo/Husqeavana one that does 400m2. Essentially I guess this one has a bigger battery and of course in all fairness LiON battery packs are expensive.

A few other things. Blades. These are small stainless items that you replace when blunt. To be honest mine have lasted over a year before changing. They are bloody sharp though so be careful when changing them. Which brings me onto safety. These are safe to use around kids and dogs. As soon as they are lifted or are hit they shut down. The skirt around the machine is low enough to prevent it from running over a shoe so it is pretty good. The blades are quite capable of cutting a 3mm stainless wire as I found so even with the various safety features I used to stop it when my crawling grandkids came over.

Oh, it also works in the rain too. Just leave it going until the autumn when you charge it up and then put it away until the next growing season.

So, check the area you need to cut. Depending upon your area you could get the same machine for less money but with a different name on the side. That being said if you need to take the boundary wire around a few objects such as trees you will need the extra area as the robot has to do more mileage to get to awkward areas so bear that in mind.

Ultimately, this machine is superb. It really does keep your lawn cut without needing any input. It’s saved me a bunch of time and my lawn always looks neat and tidy. Highly recommended.
