The unit arrived with a non functional USB cable. It was a bit of a headache setting up with the Mac, I assumed it was something to do with Apples silicon. Luckily we had a few usb cables laying around so I didn’t bother returning it. However, this makes me feel insecure about the longevity of the product.

I have been using a UMC202HD which is a two channel version and I needed a second audio interface for a PC in another room so I decided to get the 404HD this time around because I’m so impressed and happy with the product. The quality of sound is ridiculously good considering the price. The build is pretty good, but of course it’s not as solid as something costing far more. I can feel the slightest amount of play with the knobs and phones input so I can already tell without opening it that it’s directly mounted to the circuit board without any support. I don’t expect this to be a problem for me as since I don’t tweak the knobs as often as someone running a professional studio.

I don’t have a dedicated recording studio and my microphones are not in the thousand dollar range, so the benefits of a super expensive interface would have made no difference in my situation. I record at home so the acoustics aren’t optimized like a purpose built studio where the differences are perceptible.

I use Audacity a lot and because that software can’t do multiple interfaces at the same time, so the 404HD gives me more channels so that I can record from multiple microphones which allows me to choose and mix. It also allows me to not have to physically swap inputs and change input settings and levels along with that. I’d rather not wear out the panel connectors either. I don’t necessarily regret buying the 202HD, but after buying the 404HD, I think that for the extra money, it is worth having the extra channels if simply for the convenience and future proofing.

This is the second Interface for another studio I have purchased.
Read all the reviews from so called people who think they know or understand the true value of what they have at their fingertips.
Without all the jargon and complicated explanations for me this little baby does everything I need it to do.
By no means the only Behringer device in my studios in fact its the third or fourth product I have.
    Drivers install painless…

Advice to anyone installing Drivers whether on this device or any other MAKE SURE YOUR COMPUTER IS COMPLETELY UPTO DATE.
I’m talking more Windows than MAC, the only thing I ever owned with Mac in the title was a raincoat.
So this review isn’t for the MAC but even so make sure the device your installing the drivers on is completely upto date.
Yes their will be some noise as with any interface but this is normal, and once you have set all volumes adequate for recording their is absolutely no trace of “Hiss” or “Noise”
If there is noise its usually a faulty or bad lead “Do not buy cheaply made leads” Your a pro arn’t you?
Use professional leads not half baked cheapy things you purchased from some market.
Make sure no other devices near by are interferring, Household electrical supplies can also have an affect on your sound usually bad earthing or no earthing at all.
There are all kinds of electronic devices out there that could if you have noisy electrical supplies.
No two countries will have the same electrical supplies and how they are adapted before entering your home or once they are at your Electric Consumer Unit.
I totally endorse Behringer products but I am nothing to do with the company, It’s just that I have used their products for the last twenty five years or so and would recommend them to anyone.
I will say this, on my device UMC404HD the main volume turns down or up in the oposite way to what I’m used to, I did think is mine a one off but nah I don’t think so.
    Note to Behringer.
It would be of help that if the UMC404HD is not rackmounted so the user looking down on the unit, would have been better to also print white on top the unit the connections at the back.
Just a simple explanation of the connections so the user doesn’t have to keep picking up the unit to see where a connection needs to be made or on what side is the 48v switch, sometimes thinking its on the left side or what ever.
If their was an explanation of that on the top this would make things a whole lot easier, I am designing a transparant decal for mine.
I love the look of these units the front display and all the buttons, and controls are clear easy to see and read when dialing in or out.
I like the black finish but also another tip for Behringer please make allowance for these units or future units to easily mounted under a shelf, just drill one or two holes at the sides so a bracket can be fitted.
I have already done this with one of my interfaces video of which will be shared here at some point.

I am not advising anyone to drill into your interface and mount it.
If you do just make sure you look inside first to make sure no electronic parts are close to the walls.
    Anyway excellent unit.

I had a problem with random stuck notes on any department, any note, and at random times. I was using a ESI U86XT had good volume out but was causing this issue bought the Behringer at the recommendation of a friend, and has been faultless. The only slightly negative review is in comparison to the ESI unit the output volume is lower.

This has enabled me to use the DAW on my laptop as a multitrack recorder and record 4 tracks at once. Sold my Zoom multitracker. Pre amps for vocals and acoustic guitars are very good. Easy to set-up, just download the drivers from the website and works immediately, but did need to experiment with the input settings on my DAW. Recommended, glad I bought it, does just what need with minimal fuss.

So far everything I have recorded is clear and works well.

I have used it with direct input with guitar, phantom powered microphones and passive microphones. I record directly into a macbook into garage band.

    No complaints.

I have not yet used it with monitor speakers – just headphones, so can’t comment on it’s functionality there.

After having it a while it’s a no brainer as a budget option or even vs some of the premium choices as I’m not really sure what else you would want from an interface!

I use this literally every day, and I have no complaints. Multiple inputs and outputs come in handy, it gives you the phantom power you need, and it has a number of volume controls to manage – if you’re after a simple piece of studio tech that does everything it says it does, this is it.

The box is great and the sound is fine. The audio driver for windows however is limited and becomes problematic when changing uses. For the price it is amazing and a shame that the audio driver cant is more robust. Please sort this out. When I have to plug and re-plug it wears out the whole interface

Good for a low entry audio interface. I had to replace my Delta 1010 Lt soundcard as I have upgraded my P.C. Believe me, if I could somehow use my PCI soundcard on my new MoBo, I would, it’s been a brilliant card for many years. The Behringer UMC404HD has it’s limitations, but hey, I’ll get use to it. I have to re-train my lug holes (ears) lol. Good budget USB sound interface.

So I had the UMC202 before which gave me two input channels – one XLR and one 1/4″ jack but outgrew that as I added more instruments I wanted to record.

This unit comes with 4x XLR ports (which allow normal 1/4″ jack inputs too), switches to dedicate that port to instrument or mic, individual gain control, external monitor, clip monitor, and much more. On the rear it has multiple output options for transfer sound direct to mixing tables, stereo equipment or computer.

For my setup, I use two ports for dedicate microphone and the other two dedicate for instruments (keyboard and electro-accoustic ukulele), and can record all 4 simultaneously. It connects from the included USB lead and has built in 48v phantom power. This can also be powered using their supplied power cable so you don’t need USB to run it either.

On my setup, I use an amp as an external monitor run off the headphone jack on the right hand side for playback and this unit outputs in full stereo. It was instantly recognisable in GarageBand on a MacMini without any drivers needed.

    Pros:
    – is a high definition sound for sure.
    – has plenty of outputs
    – has lots of inputs
    – loads of controls with proper dials to set
    – easy to use out of the box
    – works standalone as well as using dedicated pc setup
    – size is great and fits lovely on my desk
    – never overheats
    – solid construction with metal hard-shell and plastic front, all very strong, with sturdy dials

    Cons:
    – being ultra picky they don’t have any dial markers on the body eg 1-10, but you do have a white marker for the dial itself so you can see where you are at…
    – not a lot else really! I’m scraping the barrel here because it really is well made.

I highly recommend this as it performs even better than the UMD202 which is also a really nice purchase. Considering the price point, it easily punches above it’s weight and for what you get I think this would suit anyone from a weekend jammer all the way to a dedicated YouTuber needing multiple microphones and audio output. So versatile. Great value for money.

Wow. Just wow. Punches well above it's weight.

I bought this Audio Interface to set up a home studio (read ‘spare bedroom’!) as it had good reviews, I have used Behringer products before and have found them to be very functional and excellent VFM. I was originally going for the UMC402HD as I wasn’t sure that I needed 4 x Inputs/outputs but for the extra cost, I thought it was worth paying. I hooked it up to my DAW (Cakewalk), plugged in my guitar and was up and running in 10 mins., okay, add another 10 mins for downloading and installing the drivers and within a couple of minutes after of twiddling knobs, I had a rudimentary track created.

First impressions are very positive, everything seemed to work as I’d hoped and any limitations were mine. However, one shortfall, is the manual, in this case read ‘couple of pages’. Yes you can get by but the coverage of the ‘output’ section on the rear facing panel is quite frankly pathetic and gives the impression that it was rushed out to meet a deadline. It really is apalling and lets a very good product down and left me just plugging leads into every socket until I got a sound. If you are an experienced music Producer or Engineer, you may not have the same problem but surfing the ‘net, there are a lot of questions on this subject and quite frankly, not much in the way of answers. It really does let down a very good product.

In conclusion, a very good piece of recording equipment and there are numerous testimonies to this on Youtube but just a shame about the manual. By the way, it does come with a UK plug.

The Behringer UMC-404HD was great in most aspects. 4 in, 4 out, with Out 1 and 2 fed out through a number of possible connection types. I use old and newer versions of Mac OSX (Snow Leopard and Mojave) and Windows 10. It uses built-in Core Audio on the Macs so does not require drivers. For Win 10, the drivers downloaded from the website work well. No issues with the onboard MIDI interface either. Latency is very low too, provided your processor allows you to set the buffer to a small value. I was able to set to 128 samples on the old Mac Mini with a Core 2 Duo processor and 4GB of RAM.

My only slight gripe is that you can only monitor one pair of outputs at a time through the built-in headphone socket, switchable between Outputs 1/2 or 3/4 via a button on the front panel. This doesn’t matter so much if you are using music software (DAW) and Outputs 1 and 2 as the main, stereo mix.

This aside, overall, it’s a great quality, very versatile, 4 input audio/MIDI interface and really inexpensive for what you get.

I am using this audio interface with a free DAW (CakeWalk by BandLab), on an old laptop (connected with a USB Type 3, blue port), running Windows 10. Set-up of the DAW was not straightforward, but that’s between the DAW and me, no issues with the audio interface itself. Once I got the audio and midi connections sorted and routed it works absolutely fine. So far i’ve just used it for 1 and 2 input recording, so I can’t comment of 4 in multitrack recording yet. But for 1 or 2-in it works fine, with no latency issues. To my ears the sound quality is great. I’m really happy with this kit and def recommend it for home music recording.

Many more connectivity options than other audio interfaces in its price range. I wanted multiple channels to work with when it came to audio. Also I needed MIDI to transfer sounds from the DEXED DX-7 editor to my Korg volca FM. Both tasks were handled very well with the Behringer UMC404HD. The sound quality is superb.I cannot fault this interface and the build quality is top notch. I did experience a slight buzz but this was solved by sending the output from my laptop into a Stagg direct injection box. I do not think that the interface was the problem. I can only think the some device like my Sony HIFI or other devices were the culprit. All in All for the money 102 british pounds it cannot be beat.

I like this unit overall. It’s easy to use, doesn’t seem to have any major flaws, and it fits perfectly into my workflow.
The only negative that I can find is that the pre-maps are a bit finicky. Then tend to overload easily. It’s not a major problem, you just have to make sure that you have your system gain structure set correctly.

I have the 204hd which I use for my laptop. This version(404HD) was purchased for use with my desktop & it does not disappoint. Updated drivers are a must(in windows) for best functionality. Audio quality is superb. I sometimes use it for internet radio broadcasting and have recommended it to other DJs. With phantom power, A great condenser microphone can be used for that extra special warm sound that you expect from radio broadcasts. you get seperate 1&2, 3&4 outputs and a 1&3(left) 2&4(right) mixed master output. Can use send & return to send the inputs to a mixer then return from the mixer back to the audio interface(if needs be). I highly rate this product.
