This amp is amazing, I’ve been playing for some time now and getting this amp was just as important as getting the guitar itself, this amp is definitely worth it’s money. The jump in sound quality from my old amp to the new one was great. If your looking for an amp that isn’t too expensive ($200 and above) but has genuinely good quality, this amps for you

For its diminutive size, it sounds pretty decent.
It serves the purpose well for a good sounding practice amp, that I can grab and run out the door with my guitar.
If good means thunderous enough for a concert hall, then this probably isn’t what you should be looking at. However, if you’re looking for something lightweight, decent sounding and adequate for smaller settings then this amp will suffice.
I like that I don’t need a power supply, and it has the necessary 1/4″ input for either a wireless device or cable. And, I can attach a BOSS power supply adaptor.

The sound quality is remarkable for such a small and cheap item. It’s light and plastic, but the electronics must be very good. The Gain control is especially good. It reveals the authentic voice of the guitar. Volume is plenty for private practice. The unit has a reverb with variable echo delay. That helps you tune the sound but this is not an amp you will be using for performance, so don’t worry about Fx. Battery operated or get the (sold separately) AC plug-in.

Great amp for practicing and travel. Good sound, but understand, this is a battery operated portable amp; not a Marshall stack. It has its purpose. For the sound quality, lightweight and small size, it’s pretty dang good. I will say that I bought this while on sale for less than $100. If you spend more, you could be disappointed. Better options out there at that price point.

For such a small amp it gives a great sound. Reasonably loud in a small room – select crunch and rock out!
It came with batteries but I’ve also bought the adapter as there is nothing worse than having to hunt round for replacement batteries.
Pleased with my purchase and would recommend.

Having previously used/suffered a succession of ‘toy’ amps (Orange crush, mini Marshall stack, etc..) I’d been after a ‘sofa amp’ for ages. You know- when you want to noodle away when watching TV but don’t want to bring anything bulky downstairs… So I’d decided on the Blackstar Fly or this. SO happy I chose this!
Nothing wrong with the Blackstar Fly- it’s a cracking little box. But the Katana mini is awesome! Once you get it dialled in properly (keep the treble below halfway) you’d swear you had a ‘real’ amp sitting there by the fireplace. All three channels are perfectly useable. The gain knob works very well with each, and combined with your guitars volume knob you can tailor pretty much any tone. Delay is a nice feature too, with time and level controls. (TIP – turn the time all the way down and the level up to get a half decent reverb!)
Crunchy gain sounds are rewarding, as is the high gain ‘Brown Sound’ setting.

If, like me, you are convinced your family/spouse/pets need to hear your version of that-bit-you-can-play-from-Eruption, then you have found your practice amp!

Must give the appropriate power with the item. If you are playing with back track from phone the sound changes with the type of sound too. That’s must not. Overall the clean sound is soo good.

  22. Rowena66Lqwd says:

On the clean setting had to turn up the gain higher than I would normally do to get a reasonable volume from the amp. The sound was ok but a bit lacking in warmth and depth. The other two settings don’t suit the music I play. My guitar is a semi hollow body PRS.

Bought this Amp for practice at home, I have the Katana 2×12 100W as my main Amp. Wasn’t expecting much from this little fella to be honest but was pleasantly surprised! It packs a punch for such a small Amp with a really great clean tone and the Crunch and Brown channels being a little bonus on top which also sound pretty good. I highly recommend this Amp if you are in need of a practice Amp that will not annoy the neighbours to much but is a lot of fun to use! 🙂

Wanted an amp for when I want to have a play in the house, need to be quiet but do not want a horrible, flat, one dimensional tinny sound. Was instantly amazed at the full sound you can get with this. I play better when I can get in the zone, hearing my guitar sound like it will 9n stage.

This amp allowed me to put my multi-fx in front of it and get ‘my sounds’. Ultra value for money but don’t let yourself be tricked into thinking that means it sounds cheap. It IS cheap but sounds waaaaay better than the price would have you expect.

Never remotely gigable and not going to work for most practising with others unless, like me you sometimes run through some songs with a singer (no mic) with an unplugged acoustic guitar.

Cannot recommend highly enough for the right scenario.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersFor almost 15 years, I used a Marshall mini as my practice amp. It has a serviceable overdrive sound, and a meh clean sound. When it died several months ago, I started looking for a new amp that had both a killer overdrive sound and a superior clean sound.

I bought the Fender Frontman 10G despite reading mixed reviews. I ended up returning it. The clean sound was good, the overdrive, not really. Plus it was big, relatively speaking—big like the Roland Cube 40, which I used throughout the 80s and into the early 90s, along with an assortment of Boss pedals.

Which reminded me—what about Roland/Boss? And that led me directly to this gem. It’s not as compact as the Marshall mini, but still a lot smaller than the Fender. But the sound—the “Clean” is perfect, and you can dirty it up ever so slightly by pushing the gain if you choose. The “Crunch” has a great, thicky beefy sound, perfect for blues. And the “Brown”—holy guacamole. It absolutely rips, like you were playing through a huge stack.

My only quibble is that they didn’t include a power supply, so you’re forced to use 6 AA batteries from the get go. The Boss power supply, the PSA-120s, costs a whopping $35, almost half the price of the amp itself.

But that’s a minor quibble. The amp itself is the best practice amp I’ve ever owned. And that includes my old Roland Cube 40.

I am really impressed by this small amp, it fits on my book case and gives me all the sounds I need for practise at home.

I tried a couple of power supplies but they cause the amp to hum so I’ve stuck with rechargeable batteries which seem to last for about 10 hours or so on each charge.

This must be the best value guitar amp in history.
Unbelievable sound from such a small and cheap amp.
It’s all plastic – no leather covering or tweed grill – that’s what keeps the price down – but this doesn’t, compromise the sound quality in any way.
    Trust me and buy one.

This is a tiny little amp that doesn’t take up a lot of room to keep. I’m no expert as I bought this as a gift for my husband but the sound quality in my opinion is repellent. Perfect for playing the guitar in the house without being too loud to disturb the neighbours.

  46. Anonymous says:

I was skeptical, before I purchased this amp. I did look at other reviews here as well as on Youtube. I am impressed. I play mostly metal (Iron Maiden, Exodus, Megadeth) For what this is….a practice amp, I am happy.

I have Mesa Boogie, Line 6 Spider and Crate….those are for playing out or recording. This MINI, is perfect for road travels, warming up and just practicing, when you don’t want to wake up the entire house.

That being said, I play Jackson guitars with Seymour Duncan pickups. The “Brown” setting gives me modest crunch and distortion. Clean channels are very good. You won’t be getting a lot in terms of effects, yet for it’s size….it’s really good. Not to mention, it’s light weight and build pretty well.

Now, it does NOT come with a power supply. I ordered Roland’s separately. It gives a louder “buzz” than using batteries. You won’t be doing recording through this though.

I am very happy with it.

Tried the mini Lion, best looking by far but too much mid… Blackstar Fly 3, ideal size and great delay I but couldn’t find a balance between the clean/breakup volume… Katana mini had the most realistic range in tones from clean, OD and heavy distortion (brown sound). I was able to find a volume level between clean & breakup/OD without having to mess with the volume knob every time. BTW tone is subjective, maybe one of the other’s I reviewed would be better for your style of play?

It has to be one of the only battery amps with 3 band eq which is very important to me. I’d give it a 5 if it had some kind of Bluetooth technology, but otherwise it’s a great amp.

Paired it with a Zoom MS-50G pedal and a wireless transmitter for an ultra small practice setup that’s extremely convenient and doesn’t take up any space.
Great sound by itself and even better with the Zoom.
Has an Aux in to play along but I would have liked a Bluetooth connection for even easier playing along to a backing track.

Of you want to record an album or play a professional gig, then you might want something bigger. But, this is great for jamming and for a minimalist practice setup that’s mobile. I got a wireless receiver and it’s awesome. The sound quality very acceptable. It’s not loud enough to keep up with a drum set.

My only wish is that it felt and looked a little higher quality. I would have spent an extra $10-15 for that, but that doesn’t subtract any stars.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis tiny thing has a massive tone for its size.

All the three channels sound like they need to and the delay effect is a nice bonus. It lasts around 10 hours on the batteries for me but make sure you buy a 9V/2A adapter so you can plug it in too.

It takes pedals well as well.

Go for this one if your budget is 10k and especially for hard rock and metal because the others in this price range just don’t do it this well.

I have *sort of* the acoustic equivalent of this and it’s amazing. I was astonished that the Katana mini was even smaller. It looks like nothing and my initial response was buyers remorse. However, after plugging in my guitar and giving it a blast, I was lucky that my windows were intact. It sounds brilliant.

An amazing sound, if you can afford to pay a bit more (than say 50 for the Blackstar) I highly recommend it. I was blown away by the sound quality, crunch/gain settings, volume range and even a reverb! Without all that, even just as a clean practice amp, it’s amazing. I bought it so I could teach people in their gardens, due to covid, but may well end up being my go-to amp at home too. The sound quality is that of a much bigger and more expensive amp. *****
