Seems robust and ergonomics are good, even when I had to use it for several hours at a stretch

I’ve been doing all of my wood working projects with a quarter-sheet square finish sander. I’ve been watching wood working videos, and everyone seems to use random-orbit sanders, so I decided to give this one a try. It works well, and for a sander, isn’t all that loud. I bought some cheap after-market sanding disks, and they attach surprisingly well to the hook-and-loop base. I can’t speak to the effectiveness of the dust collection system, as I sand outside, and haven’t used it. For the price, I’m very happy with the sander!

There are most likely better ROS’s out there, but at this price point you can’t beat this sander. It truly makes sanding an almost fun experience! The multi-speed setting is great allowing you to sand most any density wood without any issues, burning, etc…. The additional handle is perfect for control, although not really needed, as the sander has a very low vibration feel. It’s much quieter than my past sanders. Overall it has improved my “shop time” and kept it as my happy place away from the crazy world today!!

I especially like the additional handle. If doing a small project you might not need it, but it still is not in the way at all. Very low vibration. Very happy with this purchase.

Best sander I have ever owned! Works great, easy to operate and comfortable for long periods! Easy paper set and removal, good dust collection and easy to use and operate!

Sticky sanding discs, perfect fit with my hands and sturdy construction.

Great sander. Much better than the Black & Decker I’ve been using for a few years. Dust collection is pretty good, especially when connected to a vac. the adjustable aux handle is super comfortable, the pistol switch is convenient, but for longer use, you can lock the switch on and change hand positions. Highly recommend.

This is the best Sander I’ve ever had!
Lightweight when comparing it to my father’s old Craftsman. The variable speed adjustment is simple and smooth. The ease of sanding pad removal and replacement is faster than a Nascar crew (and requires less people) because of the hook and loop attachment. It’s quieter, lighter and leaves no streaking the way my old Makita (from the 80’s) does.
Doesn’t feel cheaply made at all. I’ll be using this sander for every project from now on!

after killing 2 de-walts which didn’t last 1 year (even after repair) I tried this sander, and it lasted 2 years. I use on average of 3-4 days per week, 2+ hours at a time. I will be sending my 1st Makita in for repair/service, it’s making a squealing noise at times, but bought this as a back up and to use while other is gone. I don’t mind as I’m sure I’ll now have 2 good working sanders. Compared to 2 broken yellow ones

Bought this for my husband to sand the deck before painting. My husband like the variable speeds and the way the sander handled. It really work very well at any speed. He did have problems with the dust bag as it was difficult to remove the cover on the dust bag and replace it. Also, he found out that you should buy the abrasive dic that have sufficent holes to better collect the dust. He brought a product with insuffiecnt holes and there was dust on the sanders surface. He wishes that it came with the storage case. In general it did a very good job of sanding.

My wife sometimes helps me by sanding my woodworking projects. She was having a hard time gripping other sanders, so I bought this. We all love to use it! The multiple holding positions is great for long sanding sessions. The variable speed is alsp great to have.

If you love DYI projects this is a great tool to add to your box. This sander fits nicely in your hands and has great power for home projects.

Solid piece of kit. If it lasts as long as my Makita palm sander I’ll be very happy. I expect it will.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is the SMOOTHEST sander I have used in 40 plus years. Use any excuse to buy this, you will not be disappointed!!!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI am a furnituremaker, and have used high end sanders (Festool). For the money, it can’t be beat. The vacuum hose connection was easily solved for me by using a piece of clear tubing hose clamped to the sander, that my vacuum hose fits snugly over.

Favorite sander I’ve used by far. It is a little bulky for me (small hands) but the extra handle makes it so much easier to use. I love that it has different speeds and that you can adjust the position of the extra handle. It’s very good at collecting dust, making cleanup easier. My only complaint is that it’s sometimes a little tricky to get the button pressed to keep it at one speed without having to hold onto the trigger.

Best sander I have owned. Bought for remodeling of kitchen and it has performed with no incidents. The extra handle gives more control of the sander. Excellent buy.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersIve used festool sanders before and admittedly they’re better but theyre 4 times the cost. The festool is NOT 4 times better than this makita, its not even twice as good. Its just a little better, a little smaller and light and a little smoother. Thats it. Don’t waste your money on a snader the price of a table saw, thia makota works grea

We love this sander. We bought it for refinishing our kitchen cabinets that needed a make-over. Very powerful and very versatile. Love the handle as an alternative to palm sanding. No problems with this tool.

My wife has an older Makita single-speed random orbital 5″ sander that is still going strong and is a real workhorse. However, after using it for long periods, it starts hurting her hands due to the rather large size of the head/handle. Looking around at other, highly reviewed sanders and they all seemed pretty much the same size. Saw this and pulled the trigger. Soooo much nicer to use with its small handle, and the extra adjustable grip on the front gives far more control, especially with the adjustable speed control. At low to moderate speed settings this thing is quiet! really nice

Great sander. Hooked it up to a vacuum and it eliminated 95% of the dust and allows paper to last longer due to not having build up on the paper. Highly Recommend!!!

Easy to hold, works so much better than my smaller one. Once again, Makita out performs my expectations! Makes quick work of sanding furniture. Good for those people who have hand problems or arthritis or struggle to grip things

My husband got me this for Valentine’s Day and it’s amazing!! I love that it has the switch to stay on (I didn’t realize it the first time I used it and my hand was super sore the next day.)

Hey guys. If you want a great random orbit sander, this one will suit your needs. Good size in 5″, variable speed which is a must for control, hook and loop. Can’t ask for more. Very happy with the sander. And priced right.

Fine sander, well made, the handle is great and the speed dial a big improvement over my old Craftsman. The low-low speed is appreciated, it may come in handy some day. But whoever came up with the idea to use the dishwasher drain hose kit for the vacuum attachment wasn’t thinking clearly. It *looks* fine but when the vacuum is turned on it emits this ungodly howling at a single, high-pitched note; it’s EARSPLITTING- like all the dentists’ drills in in the world at once. It must have to do with the corrugations in the tube or something. DO NOT DO THIS! I’m looking at other alternatives to this setup, since I am not buying a darned $60+ hose kit + adapter to fit Makita’s weirdly small vacuum outlet. (Incompatibility with ordinary human shop vac, -1 star.)
Here’s what I cooked up in TheFixitShop

Nice sander, but DO NOT use the dishwasher hose for the vacuum

I used this sander to sand down a couple of old doors that had layers of old paint. I had applied paint stripper to remove the paint but it would not remove the oldest coats of paint. Used this sander and a couple of 80 grit disk and it cut right through the paint and it didn’t leave a bunch of dust to be swept up. I was amazed at how much dust was collected in the little bag.

Only used it for a few products but so far so good!!! Easy to hold!! Love the lock on the switch so it will stay in and I can just sand away without always holing the trigger. Speed is easily adjustable and adjusts noticeably. I enjoy this sander so far will update after more use for reliability.

I recommend Makita highly. A bit more money than the entry level devices but it has good ergonomics, variable speed, light weight, and very durable. (including the hook pad)

Replaced a dewalt sander, the Makita is so much smoother and comfortable. Much quieter and the sound is is not irritating like the sander it replaced.

This does everything well except for its ability to remove dust via port hose collection. My former 5″ random sander, the Dewalt, was better in that respect. I do really like the ergonomic of this unit.

It’s a Makita, what’s not to love. Less vibration than my porter cable or Bauer sanders and love having easy to use dust collection as well as the adjustable handle.

This sander exceeded all expectations. The variable speed permits quiet sanding all the way up to full “all out” speed to remove material. The dust control is very good even though it’s only a bag. Easy to clean. Nice removable handle. Provides a smooth finish. Can be used as a buffer as well. All tool boxes need this Makita Random Orbital Sander.

Compared to the two Dewalt orbitals I have this is awesome! Collects dust a lot better and easy to empty. Is awesome that I can use two hands or one. The stay on button is kind awkward to put on but it’s nice that it’s easy to turn off also. No tingly fingers after using it for 6 hours lit the others. Really good sander!

This thing is awesome! I can’t believe I used a “jitterbug” style palm sander for the past decade. I’m going to throw that one in the trash. This one is so easy to change paper grits and is so much more effective and quick.
